Scots Christmas Event Starry Nights Cancelled Due to Storm Damage
The popular Starry Nights Christmas event in Beecraigs Country Park, located near Linlithgow, has been cancelled due to significant storm damage. This annual event, known for its festive lights trail, attracts thousands of visitors each year. Organisers announced the cancellation after extensive remediation efforts failed to make the area safe for public attendance.
West Lothian Council officials stated that the damage caused by recent storms necessitated major recovery operations. These involved tree surgeons, inspectors, rangers, and contractors working to assess and repair the park. Despite these efforts, it became clear that hosting Starry Nights this year would not be feasible.
Contract Termination Negotiations Underway
Following the cancellation, event organisers, GC Live Limited, expressed their intention to terminate their five-year agreement with the council early. They have proposed a £30,000 exit payment to West Lothian Council to facilitate this early termination.
A spokesperson for West Lothian Council explained that changing market conditions, particularly increased storm risk, have hindered GC Live’s ability to secure the necessary insurance for the event. Discussions took place regarding the possibility of relocating Starry Nights to an alternative venue. However, it was determined that the timeline for necessary site inspections, planning processes, and licensing would not allow for a successful event this year.
Future Events in Consideration
The council is currently exploring options for future events. The spokesperson confirmed that all income raised from the proposed exit payment will be directed to improve local parks and open spaces. This payment is equivalent to the income the council would have received had the 2025 event proceeded.
The situation has raised concerns about potential changes to the Christmas calendar in Scotland, particularly regarding the Boxing Day Bank Holiday, which is set to be moved from December 26. As negotiations continue, both parties are focused on ensuring that the community remains engaged with future festive activities.
The cancellation of Starry Nights highlights the ongoing impact of severe weather on local events and the challenges faced by organisers in maintaining safe and enjoyable experiences for the public.
