Retro Sweet Opal Fruits Make a Comeback at Tesco for 31p

Beloved retro sweet, Opal Fruits, has returned to supermarket shelves for the first time in over 27 years, bringing nostalgia to many shoppers. Initially launched in 1959, the soft, fruit-flavored taffy was discontinued by its manufacturer, The Wrigley Company, which later rebranded the product as Starburst. Currently available at Tesco for just 31p, the sweets have been spotted in stores, much to the delight of fans.
Opal Fruits were known for their vibrant flavors, including blackcurrant, lemon and lime, orange, and strawberry. Their return has been celebrated by many, with one enthusiastic shopper taking to Facebook to share their discovery. They noted the value, stating, “Bargain find in Tesco, 31p, reduced to clear, not sure all of them are at the price.”
The excitement surrounding the return of Opal Fruits reflects a broader trend of retailers reviving classic sweet treats. Just days before the Opal Fruits announcement, Aldi drew attention by reintroducing Fruit Chewy Candy bars, available for 95p. These candies, reminiscent of childhood favorites, come in raspberry, cherry, and grapefruit varieties, and have generated significant buzz on social media.
Fans expressed their joy online, with one user recalling, “Oh my god I haven’t eaten them since I was a child! They are amazing!” Another chimed in, “Please, if you ever see these, I will give you the money for 10 packets, I haven’t seen these since I was a child.”
The nostalgic return of these sweets not only highlights changing consumer preferences but also the potential for retailers to tap into fond memories, offering products that evoke a sense of joy and familiarity. As more shoppers seek out these classic candies, the response from retailers suggests that nostalgia might be a sweet business strategy.
