Refresh Your Home: Four House Plants to Embrace This Spring
As spring approaches, the time has come to rejuvenate your indoor plants. According to Luke Newnes, a gardening and plant specialist at Hillarys, this period is crucial for helping houseplants transition from their winter dormancy to a vibrant growth phase. He emphasizes that the increasing daylight serves as a signal for plants to awaken, making it essential to support them as they re-enter their growth cycle.
One important task for plant owners is to adjust their watering practices. Newnes advises a gradual increase in watering, cautioning against rushing into it. “If the top of the soil feels dry, then water; if it still feels cool or slightly damp, leave it a couple more days,” he explains. This careful approach helps avoid shock to the plants as they adjust to the changing season.
Essential Care Tips for Houseplants
Cleaning the foliage of houseplants is another vital step that should not be overlooked. Dust accumulation over the winter months can block light and hinder photosynthesis. “A gentle wipe with a damp cloth helps them photosynthesize properly again,” Newnes notes. This simple act can significantly enhance the health of your plants as they prepare for the growing season.
Repotting is also recommended during this time. Newnes states, “Early spring is absolutely the best time to repot. Plants are gearing up for a growth spurt, so giving them fresh soil and a bit more space now means they can use it straight away.” He suggests that when repotting, one should only increase the pot size by a few centimeters to prevent root rot caused by excess moisture.
When transferring a plant to a new container, Newnes offers a precise method. “I loosen the roots a little, place the plant at exactly the same depth it was before, and water just enough to settle the new soil.” This technique minimizes stress on the plant after its relocation.
Choosing the Right Plants for Your Space
Expanding your indoor garden is an excellent way to introduce new life into your home. Newnes recommends several varieties that thrive during this season. “I love adding fresh greenery in late winter because it instantly lifts a room that’s been feeling a bit grey,” he says. His top choices include snake plants, peace lilies, spider plants, and pileas, which respond well to increased light and can enhance the aesthetic of any space.
Selecting plants suited for specific areas of your home is equally important. In bright living rooms, statement plants such as monsteras, areca palms, and fiddle leaf figs flourish. Bedrooms benefit from quieter plants like peace lilies and philodendrons, while snake plants are particularly suitable for nighttime as they continue to release oxygen during sleep. Bathrooms, with their natural humidity, provide an ideal environment for ferns and calatheas.
For those concerned about low-light conditions, Newnes reassures that certain plants thrive even in less illuminated spaces. “Plants like snake plants, pothos, aglaonema, and the cast iron plant are incredibly forgiving,” he explains. He clarifies that “low light” does not equate to “dark corners”; rather, it refers to areas with indirect sunlight, such as those a few feet back from a bright window.
Newnes emphasizes a fundamental principle for plant care: “If you match the plant to the environment rather than forcing a plant to fit the décor, everything thrives more naturally.” This approach ensures that your plants will flourish throughout the year, rewarding your efforts with vibrant growth.
Currently, snake plants can be found at B&Q for prices ranging from £15.99 to £16.99. Adopting Newnes’ advice can lead to a flourishing indoor garden, bringing freshness and vitality into your home as the seasons change.
