Rainbow Weather Secures $5.5M for Enhanced Weather Forecasting
Warsaw-based climate technology startup Rainbow Weather has successfully raised $5.5 million in seed funding aimed at refining short-term weather forecasting capabilities and broadening its market presence. The funding round was led by a group of investors, including Yuri Gurski, founder and president of Flo Health, a prominent digital women’s health application that achieved unicorn status.
With this new influx of capital, Rainbow Weather intends to increase its weather forecasting parameters, extend its prediction horizon from four hours to a full 24 hours, and enhance its footprint in the business-to-business sector. The announcement arrives as the startup celebrates reaching 1 million installs and launching application programming interfaces (APIs) tailored for industries that depend heavily on precise weather data, such as logistics, agriculture, aviation, navigation, drone operations, and outdoor activities.
Focus on Precision and User Experience
Founded in 2021 by Alexander Matveenko, who previously established the mapping startup MapData—acquired by Mapbox in 2017—Rainbow Weather specializes in hyperlocal, minute-by-minute forecasts. The app excels in accurately predicting rain and snow within short timeframes. For instance, if a user checks the weather at 3:51 AM, the forecast is precise through to 7:51 AM.
The app’s data refreshes every ten minutes, offering spatial accuracy down to one square kilometre, which the company claims distinguishes it from larger weather providers like The Weather Company, AccuWeather, and Apple Weather. These competitors often provide less frequent updates and broader prediction windows.
Rainbow Weather adopts a unique methodology by integrating data from various sources, including radar, satellite imagery, weather stations, and even smartphone barometers. This multi-source approach aims to minimize errors associated with relying on a single data source while enabling faster forecasts compared to traditional systems.
Expanding Features and Capabilities
Beyond precipitation forecasting, the app features tools for tracking hurricanes and wildfires. The wildfire tracking capability was launched in response to the devastating Palisades Fire, which is noted as the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles’ history. This expansion illustrates Rainbow Weather’s commitment to providing comprehensive and timely weather information.
The company also operates weatherindex.ai, an open-source platform that compares short-term precipitation forecasts from various providers against verified airport weather reports in real-time. This tool enhances transparency and reliability in weather forecasting, a critical factor for users across multiple industries.
As Rainbow Weather continues to innovate and expand, it positions itself as a significant player in the climate technology sector, focusing on delivering ultra-accurate short-term forecasts to meet the growing demands of consumers and businesses alike.
