North Belfast’s Floral Hall Set for Revival with £500,000 Funding

Funding of £500,000 has been secured to restore the historic Floral Hall in North Belfast, an iconic venue that has fallen into disrepair for decades. Originally opened in 1936, the Floral Hall has a rich history, serving not only as a dance hall but also hosting concerts featuring renowned artists such as Pink Floyd and Gene Vincent. The funding aims to install a new roof and facilitate a comprehensive restoration, marking a significant step towards revitalizing the building and its community significance.

The Floral Hall ceased operations as a concert venue in 1972 and has remained largely unused since 1973, when it was last utilized as a count centre for the Northern Ireland referendum. Local councillor Carl Whyte expressed optimism about the funding, stating that it is “great news” not only for the local area but for a wider audience who cherish the venue’s legacy. He noted that the initial phase of restoration included an extensive asbestos removal operation, a critical step given the building’s long-standing neglect.

Restoration Plans Take Shape

Councillor Whyte has been in touch with constituents since his election in 2019, receiving numerous requests for the restoration of the Floral Hall. “It holds a lot of fond memories for people as a dance hall and venue for concerts,” he explained. The councillor highlighted that the removal of asbestos was crucial; it had deterred builders from engaging with the project due to safety concerns.

With the removal now complete, the next phase involves securing a contractor to replace the roof, which is expected to cost the allocated funding of £500,000. Whyte emphasized the importance of preserving the building for future generations, noting, “We can now bring it back so people can enjoy it up here in the Cavehill for the next couple of decades.”

The upcoming steps include a tender process to appoint a contractor and community engagement to determine how the Floral Hall can best serve the public moving forward. “We want to hear from people across Belfast on what they want to see in the Floral Hall,” Whyte remarked, inviting suggestions on potential uses, whether that be a return to its dance hall roots or hosting concerts.

Community Engagement and Future Vision

Whyte envisions a dual role for the Floral Hall, combining entertainment with educational opportunities. “I think there’s an educational role the zoo can play across Belfast, across Northern Ireland, and further afield,” he stated. He suggested that the Floral Hall could serve as both a music venue and an educational space, enriching the community’s cultural landscape.

Reflecting on the journey toward revitalization, Whyte acknowledged the challenges faced. “It’s a long process and it has taken too long, but it’s better than it was three or four years ago when there was nothing happening here,” he remarked. The completion of asbestos removal signifies a turning point for the venue, paving the way for its eventual restoration.
