New Indie Bookstore and Record Shop Opens in Pittsfield

Laurie and Emma Lenski have officially opened the doors to their new venture, Indie Readery & Records, on October 23, 2023. Located at 314 North Street in downtown Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the 600-square-foot store offers a curated collection of new and used books, vinyl records, and a variety of other items, including unique gifts and organic personal care products.

Focus on Community and Diversity

The shop’s inventory reflects a commitment to diversity, emphasizing works that align with liberal and progressive viewpoints. “It’s very eclectic, and we have a wide variety of voices and products represented,” said Emma Lenski. The couple aims to create an inclusive space that serves underrepresented populations in mainstream culture, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community.

In addition to books and records, the shop features a gallery area that will showcase local artists’ work in rotating three-month exhibitions. “The artists will keep all of the profits from these,” Emma noted. The space will also host various events, including author readings, book signings, open mics, poetry slams, drag story times, and movie screenings.

Innovative Features and Eco-Friendly Practices

Indie Readery & Records is designed to be inviting and comfortable, with seating areas for customers to relax and enjoy the ambiance. The store includes dedicated sections for children’s literature and music albums, along with a “refillery” for organic cleaning and personal care products. This initiative, developed in partnership with North Adams-based Plant Connector, encourages customers to reduce single-use plastic by bringing in their own containers to refill. “There’s been a lot of interest in that,” Emma said.

Laurie and Emma, who have been a couple for twelve years, bring a wealth of personal experience to their new business. Laurie, a lifelong resident of Berkshire County, has a background in home renovation, having spent 25 years as a painter. Emma, originally from eastern Massachusetts, has a strong connection to the literary world, growing up in a family of avid readers.

The idea for the bookstore emerged from Laurie’s desire for a career change. “After being a painter for so many years, I decided it was time to do something else that would be less physical,” she explained. Their discussions led them to realize the demand for an independent bookstore in downtown Pittsfield. “We saw a need for that in Pittsfield,” Laurie added.

Revitalizing Downtown Pittsfield

The Lenski couple’s vision extends beyond their shop; they aspire to contribute to the revitalization of downtown Pittsfield. “We definitely see great potential for downtown,” Laurie shared, recalling her childhood shopping trips with her mother in the area. With a community of local businesses focused on restoring the vibrancy of the downtown, they aim to be a part of this movement.

Despite the rise of digital media, the owners believe that books and vinyl records are experiencing a resurgence. “Although we’re living in a digital age, I’m getting tired of that and want to live a more analog life,” Laurie stated. This sentiment resonates with many customers, who have shown significant support since the shop’s opening, expressing excitement about its presence in the community.

Indie Readery & Records is open Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 10:00 to 18:00, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. As the shop settles into its new role in Pittsfield, the Lenski couple looks forward to fostering a welcoming environment for all.
