New £60 Million Bridge to Connect Paisley with Glasgow Airport

Plans for a new bridge linking Paisley to Glasgow Airport have been unveiled, marking a significant development in transport infrastructure for the region. This ambitious project, costing an estimated £60 million, aims to enhance connectivity and support economic growth by improving access to both the airport and the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS).
The local authority, Renfrewshire Council, has secured £38.7 million from the UK government’s Levelling Up Fund for the AMIDS South project, while committing an additional £18.8 million towards building a new road bridge across Paisley Harbour. This new infrastructure is expected to foster economic growth, potentially generating an extra £136 million in private sector investments.
Enhancing Transport Links and Economic Opportunities
The planned bridge will significantly improve transport links from Paisley town centre to Glasgow Airport, facilitating easier access for both residents and businesses. The project also includes new roads, as well as dedicated walking and cycling routes, aligning with modern transport needs and promoting sustainable travel.
Transport Scotland will contribute £1.5 million to create a safe access route from Gallowhill via an underpass on a former railway line. This improvement is part of a broader strategy to integrate public transportation options, including a network of roads connecting the town’s train and bus stations to AMIDS, Glasgow Airport, and Inchinnan.
According to Iain Nicolson, the Council Leader, “It will bring high-quality jobs, world-leading industry and provide a significant boost to the area’s economy.” He emphasized the importance of appropriate access to Scotland’s manufacturing innovation hub, connecting communities to education and employment opportunities.
Project Timeline and Environmental Impact
The construction is scheduled to be completed by 2028. The bridge will also connect to the new Paisley Grammar School Community Campus, enhancing accessibility for students and families in the area. In addition to improving transport links, the project is projected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 21,700 tonnes, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability.
Farrans Construction, known for their work on the Govan to Partick bridge in Glasgow, has been appointed to oversee the construction of this vital infrastructure. The project not only aims to support local economic growth but also to enhance the region’s appeal to businesses considering relocation.
As the plans progress, stakeholders are optimistic about the potential benefits this bridge will bring to Paisley and the surrounding areas, paving the way for a more connected and economically vibrant community.
