Minister Collaborates with Visitor Economy Sector to Overcome Challenges
The visitor economy in Jersey is facing significant challenges, as outlined by the Economic Development Minister, Deputy Kirsten Morel. In a recent discussion, he emphasized his close collaboration with industry representatives to address these ongoing difficulties, which have arisen over the past few years.
Industry Challenges Highlighted
During a session of the States Assembly, Deputy Karen Wilson inquired about the sector’s recovery and performance during the summer season, especially following earlier concerns regarding its viability. In response, Deputy Morel acknowledged the numerous “headwinds” that have impacted the visitor economy, including Brexit, the Covid pandemic, and rising costs associated with wages and other structural price increases.
“The visitor economy has faced many headwinds over the last four, five years,” Deputy Morel stated. He indicated that consumer demand has also declined in regions that typically contribute to tourism in Jersey. “In the sense that, has it been where I would like to be, the answer is a quite simple no. I would like to see more tourists come to Jersey than we have had,” he remarked, underscoring the need for improvement.
Strategic Measures and Funding Initiatives
To foster growth in this sector, Deputy Morel has been actively working with several organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Jersey Hospitality Association, and Visit Jersey. He highlighted the allocation of £4 million in additional funding for Visit Jersey over this year and the next. Furthermore, he mentioned a supplementary £2 million aimed at assisting Ports of Jersey in securing new air routes to enhance connectivity and attract more visitors.
While ongoing challenges remain, the Minister’s proactive approach signals a commitment to strengthening Jersey’s visitor economy. By focusing on collaboration and financial support, Deputy Morel hopes to lay a more robust foundation for future tourism growth. The measures in place aim not only to boost visitor numbers but also to ensure the sector’s sustainability as it navigates through current and future challenges.
