Marks and Spencer to Close 11 Cafes as Part of Revamp

Marks and Spencer (M&S) has announced plans to close 11 cafes across its UK stores as part of a strategy to modernize its food offerings. The closures will affect less than four percent of the retailer’s 316 food stores, allowing M&S to repurpose the space in smaller locations for a broader selection of popular products.
As part of this initiative, M&S has assured that no employees will face redundancy. Instead, staff will be reassigned to different roles within the company. The closures are aligned with a wider investment plan of approximately £300 million, which includes the potential opening of around 100 new M&S Food halls. Additionally, the company plans to introduce new coffee shops, starting with one at its flagship location in Bristol city centre.
Strategic Changes to Enhance Customer Experience
An M&S spokesperson commented on the changes, stating, “As we look to modernize our food business and offer the best of M&S Food to more people, more often, we’re investing in our store estate to give our customers the widest possible product range.” This transformation reflects M&S’s commitment to providing a greater variety of food options in smaller stores.
The specific cafes that will be closing, along with their final operating days, have not yet been disclosed. M&S has previously converted several full-line stores into food stores as part of its growth strategy, aiming for approximately 420 food stores by the end of 2028.
Recovery and Resilience Post-Cyberattack
Despite these strategic developments, M&S is still recovering from a substantial cyberattack that began in mid-April 2023. The retailer has estimated the financial impact of the breach at around £300 million. Following the attack, M&S suspended online orders for six weeks after hackers accessed personal information of potentially millions of customers.
The chairman of M&S informed Members of Parliament that the hack appeared to be an orchestrated attempt to undermine the business. Other retailers, including Co-op and Harrods, also faced cyberattacks, which left some shelves empty for weeks.
With its ongoing investments and strategic shifts, M&S is working to strengthen its market position and enhance its customer experience in a competitive retail landscape.
