Lidl Targets Powys with Plans for New Supermarkets by 2025
Lidl has announced plans to expand its presence in the UK by opening new supermarkets, with two locations specifically identified in Powys. The supermarket chain released its site requirements brochure for autumn 2025, detailing potential sites across North and Mid Wales. The proposed locations in Powys signal Lidl’s commitment to increasing its accessibility in regions where there is demand for its stores.
Among the new stores, one is set to be established in [specific town in Powys], while the other will be located in [specific town in Powys]. These sites are part of a larger initiative that includes hundreds of new stores across the UK. Lidl is focusing on a diverse range of locations, including town centres, retail parks, and standalone sites.
Richard Taylor, Lidl’s Chief Development Officer, emphasized the company’s dedication to meeting customer needs: “There are still so many parts of the country crying out for convenient access to a Lidl store.” This statement highlights Lidl’s strategy to enhance convenience for shoppers by providing more locations.
To meet its expansion goals, Lidl is looking for sites that conform to specific requirements. These include unit sizes ranging from 18,000 to 26,500 sq ft, a minimum of 100 dedicated car parking spaces, and plots of at least 1.5 acres for standalone stores or up to 4 acres for mixed-use developments. This approach aims to ensure that new stores can comfortably accommodate the needs of customers while fitting into the local infrastructure.
The move is part of Lidl’s broader strategy to strengthen its footprint in the UK grocery market, where competition remains fierce. With discounters like Aldi also expanding, Lidl is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the market by enhancing accessibility to its stores.
As Lidl embarks on this expansion, the company is not only investing in infrastructure but also creating new job opportunities in the areas where it establishes new supermarkets. This is likely to have a positive impact on local economies, providing employment and increasing foot traffic in the surrounding areas.
The confirmation of these sites in Powys reflects Lidl’s ongoing commitment to providing affordable grocery options to a wider audience. As the company continues its growth plans, many in the community will be watching closely to see how these new stores will enhance shopping convenience and contribute to the local economy.
