Holiday Makers Warned: Common Item Could Lead to Fines in Europe

Travelers planning trips to Europe are urged to familiarize themselves with local laws, particularly regarding nicotine pouches, which may lead to fines or criminal penalties in certain countries. The product is banned in France and several other European Union nations, raising concerns for the growing number of users in the United Kingdom, currently estimated at over 590,000 according to the nicotine pouch producer KLAR.
In addition to France, both Germany and the Netherlands have enacted complete bans on nicotine pouches, highlighting the need for caution among holiday makers. Tomas Hammargren, KLAR’s Chief Risk Reduction Officer, warned that travelers caught with these products risk “fines, confiscation, or even criminal penalties.”
Essential Tips for Travelers
For those intending to carry nicotine pouches, Hammargren offered several practical tips. He suggests keeping pouches in their original packaging to expedite security checks at customs. This approach ensures that customs officers can quickly identify the items, streamlining the inspection process.
Travelers are also advised to consider the nature of their products. Nicotine pouches, such as those made by KLAR, do not contain liquids or batteries, making them suitable for both hand luggage and checked bags without the risk of leaks or battery-related issues. It is important to verify each airline’s policies regarding product use during flights, as nicotine pouches may be permitted while vaping often is not. Passengers should consult cabin crew for clarification before departure.
Another crucial consideration is the quantity of nicotine pouches taken on the trip. Many countries may have limited or no availability of nicotine alternatives to cigarettes, making it wise to stock up before traveling.
Travel Preparations and Passport Validity
Beyond product regulations, travel experts at the Post Office are advising travelers to ensure that their passports are valid before their journey. Richard Fleetwood, postmaster at the Town Centre Washington Post Office, emphasized the importance of understanding passport validity rules, especially for those traveling to the Schengen Area or EU countries.
Fleetwood noted, “My top tip to all travelers is simple – plan ahead. Be sure to check your passport’s expiry date and validity before booking your trip.” For travel to Schengen countries, the passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and must have at least three months of validity remaining on the date of departure.
By taking these precautions, travelers can avoid unnecessary complications and ensure a smoother journey to their holiday destinations.
