Historic White Hart Inn in Bath to Undergo Major Revamp

A historic pub in Bath, the White Hart Inn at Widcombe, is set to undergo a significant renovation following the approval of revitalization plans. The Grade II-listed establishment, which closed its doors in March 2024, has been deemed in need of urgent restoration. The new owners, Somerset’s Walcot Group, are committed to preserving the site’s heritage while enhancing its offerings.
Plans submitted to the Bath and North East Somerset Council outline extensive refurbishment efforts, aimed at restoring both the interior and exterior of the pub. The proposed changes include remodelling, landscaping, and expanding the facilities to accommodate a larger dining area and bar. Additionally, the project intends to convert a nearby residential unit and former gin distillery into ten guest rooms, expanding the pub’s role within the community.
Council officers have indicated that the development aligns with the established use of the site and will enhance dining and accommodation options in the area. They acknowledged that the proposal involves the loss of a dwelling, which is considered necessary to facilitate broader community benefits and heritage enhancements. The plans will allow for significant improvements to visitor accommodation and the overall pub experience.
The White Hart Inn is envisioned to become a central hub for the Widcombe community. A statement from the applicants outlined their goal: “The applicants aim to re-establish The White Hart as the centre-piece of the Widcombe community, re-imagining a collection of historic and modern buildings to provide a pub, attached restaurant, private dining, guest rooms, and a landscaped courtyard garden.”
As renovations progress, the community looks forward to the revival of this historic venue, which has been a significant part of Widcombe’s social fabric. The redevelopment not only promises to bring new life to the White Hart Inn but also aims to enhance the overall attractiveness of the area for both residents and visitors alike.
