Farage Promises Pro-Business Government Amid Tax Strategy Shift
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, announced plans to establish “the most pro-business” government in British history as he unveiled his economic vision in a speech in London on October 16, 2023. Promising sweeping deregulation, Farage argued that the United Kingdom has yet to fully capitalize on the opportunities presented by Brexit.
In his address, Farage pointed to what he described as a “harsh truth” regarding current regulations, stating, “Regulations and regulators, in many areas, are worse than they were back in 2016.” He emphasized the need to “free businesses to get on and make more money,” asserting that a government under Reform UK would fundamentally reshape the economic landscape, creating more well-paid jobs for workers.
While outlining his vision, Farage tempered his party’s previous commitment to cut taxes by £90 billion in 2024. He acknowledged the impact of past governance by both the Labour Party and the Conservative Party, claiming they have “wrecked the public finances.” Consequently, he stated that Reform UK would first need to bring public spending under control before implementing significant tax cuts.
The party’s manifesto previously included proposals that would amount to tax reductions equivalent to about a third of the NHS budget. This plan featured raising the personal allowance to £20,000, introducing a £100,000 tax-free allowance for companies, and exempting certain high street businesses from council tax. However, these proposals drew criticism from the Institute for Fiscal Studies, which described them as “problematic,” highlighting that the costs exceeded the party’s claims.
Opposition parties reacted sharply to Farage’s announcement. A spokesperson for the Labour Party accused him of aiming to “take us back to austerity.” They pointed to the challenges faced by councils run by Reform UK, alleging that there has been a failure to deliver promised savings, resulting in cuts to services and increased taxes. The spokesperson remarked, “We know that this is more empty promises and no real plan.”
In response, Sir Mel Stride, the Conservative shadow chancellor, criticized Farage’s economic credibility. He stated that Reform UK cannot be taken seriously, especially when their promises seem to disintegrate rapidly. Stride remarked, “They are a one-man band and have resorted to junking promises they made only recently in a desperate attempt to appear economically credible.” He further noted that the party’s local government efforts have failed to find savings, leading to tax hikes on families.
As the political landscape evolves, Farage’s pledge and the accompanying shift in tax strategy will likely continue to stir debate among policymakers and the public as they gauge the potential impact on the UK economy and its future direction.
