Denbighshire Council has approved a one-year extension to its current corporate plan, titled The Denbighshire We Want. Originally set to conclude in 2027, the plan will now remain in effect until 2028. This extension aims to provide the incoming cabinet and council, following the local government elections scheduled for May 2027, with the necessary time to craft their own five-year corporate plan for the period 2028–2033.

The decision to extend the corporate plan reflects a commitment to ensuring that the new administration’s objectives align with its specific priorities and long-term vision. This approach is expected to enhance councillor ownership of both the plan and its implementation.

Julie Matthews, deputy leader and lead member for corporate strategy, policy, equalities, and strategic assets, emphasized the importance of this proposal. She stated, “This proposal gives the next Cabinet and Council the time and space to develop a Corporate Plan that truly reflects their priorities, while ensuring continuity and stability for our residents.”

Significance of the Corporate Plan

The corporate plan serves as a fundamental strategic document guiding the council’s operations and supporting its statutory obligations under several major pieces of legislation. These include the Local Government and Elections (Wales) Act 2021, the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015, and the Equalities Act 2010. By extending the plan, Denbighshire Council aims to maintain a consistent direction for its initiatives and services during the transition to the new administration.

The extension will also ensure that key strategies remain a focus for the council, including the Climate and Nature Strategy, Digital Strategy, Economic Strategy, and Workforce Strategy. These strategies are critical for addressing current challenges and planning for future growth in the region.

By allowing for a thoughtful and comprehensive approach to the upcoming corporate plan, the council seeks to enhance the overall well-being of its community while fostering a collaborative environment for the incoming leaders. The extension not only provides stability but also positions Denbighshire for continued progress in delivering essential services and initiatives to its residents.
