Care Home Secures Approval for 16 New Affordable Apartments
A care home in Bury St Edmunds will soon expand its offerings with the addition of 16 new affordable apartments. The plan, submitted by the Orbit Group, received approval from West Suffolk Council planning officers, allowing the refurbishment and extension of the care home located on Cullum Road.
The approved works aim to address an acute need for affordable housing for the elderly in the district. According to the planning statement, these new extra care apartments are expected to not only provide essential accommodation but also potentially free up larger family-sized homes for other residents in the area.
The facility is owned by Suffolk County Council and operated by the Orbit Group under a long-term lease, ensuring that all new apartments will be available at an affordable rent. The proposal received a positive recommendation from Bury Town Council, indicating a community-wide support for the initiative.
As part of the approval, construction for both the refurbishment of the existing building and its extension must commence within three years. This timeline emphasizes the urgency and commitment to enhancing local housing options for the elderly population.
The development aligns with broader efforts to tackle housing shortages and improve living conditions for vulnerable groups. The introduction of these affordable apartments is seen as a significant step towards meeting the needs of the community in Bury St Edmunds, ensuring that elderly residents have access to suitable and affordable living arrangements.
