BiMA Secures €500K to Transform Storytelling for Children
Munich-based startup BiMA has successfully raised €500,000 in pre-seed funding, marking a significant step towards revolutionizing children’s storytelling. The funding round was led by Antler and included contributions from several prominent angel investors, such as the Oetinger Publishing Group, which previously supported Germany’s popular audio platform, Tonies.
This fresh capital is expected to facilitate BiMA’s market entry and support its goal of redefining how families engage with stories. The company aims to create meaningful, screen-free moments for children, promoting connection over distraction.
Creating Meaningful Connections
Founded in 2024 by Larissa Ruf (CEO) and Greta Garkisch (CTO), BiMA emerged from a shared belief that technology should enhance human connections. Ruf and Garkisch, both from Munich, initially met at Academy Consult Munich, a leading consultancy for students. Their collaboration led to the development of BiMA, where they focus on fostering family relationships through innovative products.
BiMA’s debut product is a unique, screen-free projector designed to transform children’s bedrooms into immersive storytelling environments. Shaped like a collectible rocket, the device combines gentle projection, ambient light, and sound to create captivating storytelling experiences. This design encourages imagination and focus, steering clear of the overstimulation often associated with traditional screens. Parents can turn bedtime into a cherished ritual rather than a contentious negotiation about screen time.
The company finds itself in direct competition with established players in the edutainment sector, such as Tonies, Yoto Player, and Lunii. While these products primarily emphasize audio or modular play, BiMA introduces a novel sensory element: visual immersion without screens. This innovation merges imagination, mindfulness, and familial bonds, offering a balance between nostalgia and modernity.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, BiMA envisions creating a wider ecosystem of storytelling tools and mindful entertainment products. Ruf expressed the company’s mission succinctly, stating, “Most toys are designed to keep kids busy, and that’s perfectly fine. But we wanted to create something different: a product that brings families together at the most meaningful time of day. With BiMA, evenings become magical moments of connection and imagination.”
Julia Bielenberg, Managing Director at Oetinger Publishing Group, also commented on the significance of BiMA’s approach: “We see BiMA as a natural continuation of our tradition of storytelling innovation. Just as Tonies created a new way for families to experience stories, BiMA has the potential to redefine the way children interact with imagination, creativity, and calm.”
The successful funding round positions BiMA to make a notable impact in the children’s entertainment landscape, providing an alternative approach to storytelling that prioritizes family engagement and creativity. As the company prepares to launch its innovative product, the expectation grows for how it will influence children’s experiences and family dynamics in an increasingly digital world.
