A Belfast retailer has commended Stormont for its efforts in addressing traffic congestion in the city centre as the holiday season approaches. Chris Suitor, who co-owns the tailoring business Suitor Bros Clothiers and Custom Tailors on Arthur Street, noted that the improved traffic conditions this year mark a significant change from the previous year’s struggles.

Last year, Belfast experienced severe traffic disruptions during the evening rush hour in the weeks leading up to Christmas, described by Suitor as akin to “someone threw a hand grenade” at the city. The chaos resulted from various factors, including construction related to the new Grand Central Station and a major resurfacing project on the A2 Sydenham Bypass.

This year, Suitor highlighted the positive impact of measures implemented by the Department for Infrastructure and Translink. These initiatives include extending the moratorium on roadworks leading up to Christmas, reopening Durham Street, and launching a pilot scheme for late-night transport. “This year has definitely kicked off on a better keel than last year regarding congestion,” Suitor stated in an interview with Belfast Live.

He praised the reopening of Durham Street as a crucial development, along with the minister’s support for the Keep Belfast Moving campaign. The moratorium on roadworks began two weeks earlier than the previous year, contributing to a more positive atmosphere in the city. Suitor expressed hope for a smoother Christmas season, especially concerning traffic flow.

Despite acknowledging that the city’s road traffic system still requires significant improvements, Suitor remarked that retailers have felt more informed and supported this year compared to last. “I’m always on the case of Translink needing to improve our public network,” he said, emphasizing a more collaborative approach from the government this year.

In terms of business performance, Suitor reported an increase in foot traffic compared to the previous year, attributing this rise to the reopening of Durham Street and the extension of bus lanes. “Customers are finding it easier to come into town,” he noted, adding that the positive public relations surrounding these developments has boosted consumer confidence.

“There’s definitely a buzz around the city at the minute,” Suitor observed. He acknowledged ongoing challenges but remained optimistic about the overall sentiment among retailers. To further enhance the situation, he called for increased funding for public transport and a greater engagement with Northern Ireland’s business community to attract more investment.

Suitor described the year-long pilot scheme for late-night transport as a potential “gamechanger.” He urged the public to utilize this service to demonstrate its necessity, which could lead to its continuation. “We need to use it or lose it,” he stressed, highlighting the importance of community support for the initiative.

As Belfast prepares for the festive season, Suitor’s insights reflect a cautious optimism among local retailers. He believes that improved traffic conditions and enhanced public transport options will contribute to a successful holiday shopping period, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore the city.
