Asda has announced plans to open a total of 22 new stores across the UK starting in October, further expanding its Asda Express convenience store format. The first of these new locations will debut in Castleford, West Yorkshire, in early October, followed by additional openings throughout the month in various urban and residential areas.

The supermarket chain’s move to enhance its presence in high-footfall locations comes as Asda Express stores demonstrate strong performance. According to the company, these stores have achieved a remarkable like-for-like sales growth of 8.6% in the second quarter of this year, outperforming the broader convenience market.

New Store Locations and Strategic Focus

The new Asda Express outlets will primarily target areas with limited existing presence, such as transport hubs and densely populated neighborhoods. Each store is designed to offer a selection of up to 3,000 branded and own-label products, catering to various customer needs, including quick top-up shopping for essentials like milk and bread, as well as convenient options for lunch and dinner preparation.

David Lepley, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Asda, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, “We’re thrilled to kick off the next phase of our Express rollout and bring our heritage in delivering outstanding value to more locations across the UK.” He noted that in just three years, Asda has grown from having no convenience stores to establishing a significant presence, with almost 500 stores expected by the end of the year.
