DWP Migration Notices Essential for Legacy Benefit Recipients

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is transitioning recipients from six legacy benefits to Universal Credit through a process known as managed migration. This significant shift has been underway for several years, with Working Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits officially phased out earlier in 2023. The remaining legacy benefits will cease next March, with the DWP set to send Migration Notices to affected individuals by December 2025.

Migration Notices will play a crucial role in ensuring that claimants maintain their benefit payments during this transition. These notices will outline essential steps for transferring claims to Universal Credit and will include personal deadlines for applications to receive transitional protection. This protection ensures that individuals do not suffer financial loss during the migration period, even if they do not meet specific Universal Credit requirements.

For instance, a person currently receiving £800 monthly through Tax Credits, but only eligible for £600 under Universal Credit, would receive £200 in transitional protection, maintaining their total at £800. This measure is designed to prevent any claimant from being left financially disadvantaged as they shift to the new system.

If recipients fail to act on their Migration Notices or miss their transitional protection deadlines, their legacy benefits will be terminated. Nevertheless, they can still apply for Universal Credit after the deadline, albeit without transitional protection, which may result in lower payments than previously received.

Those who believe they have valid reasons for not meeting the deadlines can reach out to the Universal Credit Migration Notice Helpline. This helpline is available from Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 18:00, at 0800 169 0328. It is advisable to contact the helpline before the deadline to discuss potential extensions.

Individuals currently receiving legacy benefits need to be proactive only if they receive a Migration Notice or if their circumstances change. For further guidance on how to respond to a Migration Notice, the Gov.uk website offers comprehensive information. It is also important to note that claiming Universal Credit before receiving a Migration Notice will exclude individuals from receiving transitional protection, thereby impacting their financial situation.

As the DWP continues its managed migration strategy, recipients of legacy benefits are encouraged to stay informed and act promptly to ensure a smooth transition to Universal Credit.
