Reality television personality Sam Thompson has opened up about the demanding nature of live broadcasts on Strictly Come Dancing, expressing relief that none of his friends will be competing this year. Speaking during a recent event, Thompson highlighted the often-overlooked challenges faced by participants and their supporters during the show’s live performances.

Thompson, who attended a taping to support his former partner Zara McDermott in her 2023 appearance alongside professional dancer Graziano Di Prima, described the experience as a “six-hour ordeal.” While the televised broadcasts typically last around 90 minutes, he explained that live audiences are required to remain seated for extended periods with minimal amenities.

Reflecting on the experience, Thompson noted, “You go and watch that live show and it’s a six-hour ordeal.” He humorously remarked that attendees are given “one carton of water” to sustain them throughout the lengthy event. With high energy on stage, the reality of the waiting game off-stage can be quite different. “You are only there to watch your person, but you sit there for six hours,” he added.

Despite his deep engagement with the show, Thompson revealed he was grateful that none of his friends would be taking part this season, stating, “So, there’ll be no live shows for me this year.” His insights into the demands of live television come as the new season of Strictly Come Dancing is set to air on September 23, 2023.
