Police and Youth Unite for Firework Safety Summit in Edinburgh

Police Scotland convened a significant summit in Edinburgh on October 26, 2023, engaging hundreds of young people to discuss firework safety. The event aimed to incorporate their perspectives into Scotland’s strategy for managing fireworks, particularly as new firework control zones (FCZs) were introduced in areas such as Corstorphine, Moredun, Gracemount, Longstone, and Sighthill. These measures were implemented to tackle antisocial behavior associated with fireworks during the ten days leading up to Bonfire Night.
The recent implementation of five additional FCZs brought the total in Edinburgh to nine, a notable increase from previous years. The leader of the City of Edinburgh Council, Jane Meagher, expressed concerns about these regulations, describing them as “arbitrary” during an interview with BBC Scotland. She emphasized the need for effective measures but acknowledged the criticisms surrounding the inconsistent application of these zones, where one side of the road may face restrictions while the other remains open.
The summit, hosted in collaboration with the youth service and charity Fearless, took place at the Corn Exchange. It served as a platform for young attendees to voice their concerns and suggestions regarding the use of fireworks. Police Scotland officials, including Chief Superintendent David Robertson, highlighted the importance of youth engagement in shaping policies. Robertson stated, “The Igniting Change event is a terrific way for key partners to engage proactively with young people… this event demonstrates our shared commitment to keeping Scotland’s communities safe.”
The discussion at the summit revolved around education and community involvement as key solutions to the challenges posed by fireworks. Police Scotland and Fearless plan to launch a new anti-firework social media campaign, set to debut on October 27, 2023, across platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram. This initiative aims to raise awareness and promote responsible behavior among young people regarding the use of fireworks.
Lindsay McDade, the event organizer and manager at Fearless, stressed the importance of prevention and community understanding. “Fireworks control zones are just one tool to help reduce disorder, but they’re not the full solution,” she noted. “Real change comes from working with young people, listening to their voices, and supporting communities to understand the far-reaching impact of fireworks misuse.”
In addition to police and youth services, representatives from various organizations, including the Scottish Ambulance Service and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, participated in the summit. They provided valuable insights into the risks associated with fireworks and the impact of misuse on both individuals and the community.
As the summit concluded, young participants had the opportunity to express their thoughts through a digital graffiti wall, fostering a creative outlet for their opinions and ideas. This interactive platform aimed to empower them to lead conversations about firework safety among their peers.
The rise in recorded incidents involving fireworks has raised alarms among community leaders and emergency services. The police hope that the combination of FCZs, dispersal zones, and community engagement initiatives will contribute to a safer Bonfire Night experience.
The summit marks a proactive approach by authorities to address the issues surrounding fireworks while ensuring that young voices are heard in the decision-making process. As communities prepare for Bonfire Night, the onus will be on both the authorities and young people to foster a culture of safety and responsibility regarding fireworks use.
