Consumers Warned Against Samsung Refrigerators Amid Ongoing Issues
Samsung, a leading player in the consumer electronics market, faces increasing scrutiny over its line of refrigerators, which have been linked to numerous complaints from consumers. Reports indicate that many buyers have encountered significant issues, prompting warnings from experts and consumers alike.
In 2019, a comprehensive investigation by News 6 in Florida revealed a troubling pattern of complaints from hundreds of families regarding their Samsung refrigerators. Consumers reported problems such as frozen components, stuck ice buckets, and excessive ice crystal build-up. Additionally, an ABC 10 News report highlighted instances of “dangerously high temperatures” in some models. To address these issues, Samsung requested affected customers to cut the cords of their malfunctioning refrigerators and provide photographic evidence, a measure implemented to prevent the resale of defective units.
These issues prompted the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to initiate an investigation in 2022. The investigation followed a surge of complaints recorded over three years, culminating in 2021. During this period, a dedicated Facebook group emerged, gathering over 80,000 users who shared their experiences with Samsung’s cooling appliances. Notably, Samsung received the highest number of refrigerator-related complaints compared to its competitors in 2022.
Consumer Reports has raised concerns about the performance of Samsung’s side-by-side refrigerators, stating they are “more likely than other brands and models to stop keeping food cold” due to compressor failures. Other brands, including Electrolux, Kenmore, and KitchenAid, also appeared on the list of problematic models. Similarly, Samsung’s bottom-freezers were identified as particularly susceptible to icemaker problems.
Benjamin Schlichter, who operates the Bens Appliances and Junk YouTube channel and an appliance shop in Ohio, described Samsung’s refrigerators as “the most notorious refrigerators on the U.S. market.” He pointed to recurring issues such as noise, water leakage, and cooling failures. Schlichter noted that his company has repaired thousands of Samsung’s two-door side-by-side models and even developed a universal DIY kit to address some of these faults.
Additional findings from a survey involving over 200 technicians confirmed Schlichter’s concerns, with many stating that Samsung’s indoor ice units are “by far, the worst of the bunch.” Notably, no Samsung refrigerator has made it to any recommendation lists for top-mount, single-door, side-by-side, or French door refrigerators.
Discussions in public forums further illuminate the challenges faced by consumers. Reports of icemaker failures requiring multiple replacements, system malfunctions, ice build-up, and water leakage have surfaced. On Samsung’s community forum, buyers shared experiences of refrigerators failing within months or even hours of purchase. Complaints also included abnormal power consumption, damaged products, and inadequate customer support.
Legal action has been taken against Samsung as well. In 2022, a class-action lawsuit was filed by consumers alleging that defects in Samsung refrigerators severely compromised their ability to maintain safe food storage temperatures. The plaintiffs emphasized that these defects are critical to the refrigerators’ primary function. This lawsuit followed another filed in 2017 regarding a faulty ice tray system.
In response to ongoing consumer complaints, local consumer protection agencies have ordered Samsung to issue refunds or replacements for defective units. According to USA Today, Samsung refrigerators remain the appliances most frequently reported to the CPSC. In a 2023 analysis, it was revealed that over 75% of refrigerator-related complaints were associated with Samsung. Data from the CPSC indicates that Samsung’s refrigerators have consistently accounted for the largest share of performance-related complaints since 2020.
Samsung has faced penalties for its faulty appliances, including a court order in 2017 to provide refunds or replacements for affected buyers. Similar mandates were issued by various consumer protection bodies when refrigerators exhibited operational defects within the warranty period.
Samsung refrigerators typically come with warranties that include a two-year icemaker warranty, a ten-year compressor warranty, and a five-year sealed system warranty. As consumers continue to voice their frustrations, it remains to be seen how Samsung will address these ongoing concerns and restore its reputation in the competitive home appliance market.
