Borno Governor Zulum Supports Taraba’s Greenhouse Initiative to Combat Hunger

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has endorsed the Taraba State Greenhouse, often referred to as the Cucumber Farm, viewing it as a significant step toward enhancing food security and addressing the hunger crisis in the North East and across Nigeria. This support was expressed during the commissioning of the project at the North East Governors’ Forum summit, where concerns were raised about potential food shortages in the upcoming year.

The event in Jalingo was marked by the attendance of several state governors, including Agbu Kefas of Taraba, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, Bala Muhammed of Bauchi, Yahaya Inuwa of Gombe, and Mai Mala Buni of Yobe. A statement from Emmanuel Bello, Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communications to Governor Kefas, described the commissioning as a revolutionary moment for the region.

The greenhouse project, which has garnered local affection as the Cucumber Farm, is recognized as one of the premier vegetable cultivation sites in Nigeria. It employs advanced agricultural technology that enables year-round production, regardless of local climatic conditions. The facility is noted for its high-quality vegetables, particularly green peppers and tomatoes, which are considered among the best in the market.

In his remarks, Bello highlighted the transformative nature of the initiative, stating, “Taraba State has invariably become the headquarters of vegetables in the country.” This assertion reflects the increasing significance of the greenhouse model in enhancing agricultural productivity and food availability in the region.

Key figures behind the project include Ohad Shtilman and Eyal Tal, who, alongside a skilled team from the Taraba State Investment Company (TSI), are dedicated to ensuring the project’s success. Having learned from past challenges that led to the farm’s initial collapse, they are focused on addressing potential issues and establishing a sustainable agricultural enterprise.

The market response to the greenhouse has been overwhelmingly positive, with numerous buyers and sellers eager to engage in this lucrative venture. Furthermore, there is a noticeable uptick in investor interest, signaling confidence in the profitability and sustainability of the project.
