Law Firm Defends Angela Rayner Amid Tax Controversy
The law firm representing Angela Rayner has publicly defended itself against allegations of providing inadequate tax advice related to her recent property purchase. The firm, which facilitated the acquisition of an £800,000 flat in Hove, stated that they have been unfairly portrayed as “scapegoats” in the ongoing controversy surrounding the Deputy Prime Minister’s financial dealings.
In a statement to The Telegraph, Joanna Verrico, managing director of the family-run firm, emphasized that they do not offer tax advice. “We acted for Ms Rayner when she purchased the flat in Hove. We did not and never have given tax or trust advice. It’s something we always refer our clients to an accountant or tax expert for,” Verrico explained. She mentioned that the stamp duty on the property was calculated using HMRC‘s online calculator, based on the information provided by Rayner, which indicated a payment of £30,000.
Verrico expressed frustration over the situation, asserting, “We believe that we did everything correctly and in good faith. Everything was exactly as it should be. We probably are being made scapegoats for all this and I have got the arrows stuck in my back to show it.” She reiterated that while her firm is experienced, it is not qualified to provide tax and trust advice, and clients are encouraged to seek expert counsel in those areas.
Rayner Under Scrutiny Following Tax Payment Admission
Rayner, who also serves as Housing Secretary and is the deputy leader of the Labour Party, has acknowledged that she underpaid her tax obligations. Following new legal advice, she admitted to a shortfall of £40,000 in her stamp duty payment. This revelation has placed her under increased scrutiny, prompting her to refer herself to the Prime Minister’s ethics watchdog. A report regarding her conduct is anticipated as early as October 6, 2023.
The pressure on Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, has intensified as well. When asked five times whether he would consider dismissing Rayner if she is found to have violated the ministerial code, Starmer refrained from committing to any course of action. He stated, “I will make a decision on what I see,” emphasizing the need to establish the facts through the independent advisor’s investigation.
In response to Rayner’s situation, the Conservative Party has ramped up calls for her resignation. They highlighted statements made by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has previously asserted that ministers who commit serious breaches of rules would face dismissal. The political landscape remains charged as both sides navigate the implications of this unfolding situation.
As the investigation continues, the future of Rayner and the potential repercussions for the Labour Party hang in the balance.
