Iran Boosts Uranium Stockpile Before Israeli Military Action

A confidential report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) revealed that Iran significantly increased its stockpile of enriched uranium just days before a military attack launched by Israel on June 13, 2025. The document, which was circulated to IAEA member states, indicated that Iran possessed 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% as of that date, marking an increase of 32.3 kilograms since the agency’s last report in May.

This enriched uranium is a short technical step away from weapons-grade levels, which are defined as 90% enrichment. The report stated that the figures were derived from information provided by Iran, verification activities carried out between May 17, 2025 and June 12, 2025, and estimates based on the historical operation of relevant facilities.

Inspections Halted Amid Conflict

The IAEA’s findings also highlighted a lack of agreement between Iran and the agency regarding the resumption of inspections at facilities impacted by Israeli and US military actions. Since the outbreak of conflict, the only site that has undergone inspection is the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which operates with assistance from Russia.

Rafael Grossi, the director general of the IAEA, emphasized the necessity for immediate inspections, stating that “technical modalities to enable the full resumption of agency inspection should be concluded without delay.” The report expressed concern over Iran’s decision to limit cooperation with the IAEA following the withdrawal of UN inspectors, describing this choice as “deeply regrettable.”

As of June 13, Iran’s total stockpile of enriched uranium reached 9,874.9 kilograms, an increase of 627.3 kilograms since the previous report. The IAEA noted that approximately 42 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% could theoretically produce one atomic bomb if further enriched to 90%.

Concerns Over Verification

The IAEA has reported that it has been unable to conduct verification activities on the ground for over two and a half months, a situation that has raised serious concerns among member states. The agency underscored the importance of resuming inspections promptly to verify Iran’s declarations regarding its nuclear capabilities.
