Portsmouth Councillors Denounce Racial Abuse at Jami Mosque
Portsmouth City Councillors have publicly condemned an alleged incident of racial abuse that occurred outside the Jami Mosque on Victoria Road in Southsea. The incident reportedly took place on the evening of October 20, 2023, and involved derogatory remarks directed at individuals attending the mosque.
The councillors’ response reflects a growing concern regarding racial tensions within the community. In a statement, the council emphasized the importance of unity and respect among all residents, regardless of their background. “We stand firmly against any form of racial abuse,” stated Councillor Lisa Jones, who represents the Southsea area. “This behaviour is unacceptable and has no place in our city.”
This incident has elicited a strong reaction from both local leaders and residents. Many community members have expressed their discontent, calling for increased awareness and education on racial issues. Local activist groups are organizing meetings to discuss the importance of tolerance and inclusivity.
The Jami Mosque has served as a focal point for the local Muslim community for many years. It has been a place of worship and community gathering, promoting understanding among diverse groups. In light of the recent events, mosque leaders have called for solidarity within the community. “This incident highlights the need for ongoing dialogue and cooperation among all faiths and cultures,” said Imam Farid Ali.
The Portsmouth City Council is set to hold a special session to address the concerns raised by this incident. Councillor Michael Smith noted, “We will explore ways to enhance community cohesion and ensure that everyone feels safe and respected in Portsmouth.” The council is also expected to collaborate with local organizations to implement initiatives aimed at promoting racial harmony.
As this situation develops, the council encourages anyone who witnesses or experiences racial abuse to report it to the authorities. This incident serves as a critical reminder of the work still needed to foster a truly inclusive environment in the community.
The response from both councillors and community leaders underscores the importance of standing united against racial abuse. As Portsmouth continues to navigate these challenges, the hope remains that incidents like this will lead to constructive conversations and lasting change.
