The US Army has announced a joint investment of $13.9 million with X-Bow Systems to develop a new solid rocket motor prototype for the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS). This partnership is supported by the Department of Defense Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) and aims to enhance national production capabilities for missiles and munitions.

The OSC’s investment is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the supply chain for solid rocket motors (SRMs) and improve the industrial base in this critical area. By leveraging X-Bow’s proprietary advanced-manufactured solid-propellant (AMSP) processes, the initiative seeks to create a reliable source of SRMs.

Strategic Manufacturing Partnership

Jason Hundley, CEO of X-Bow Systems, emphasized the significance of this investment, stating, “This investment will introduce next-generation manufacturing for critical defence systems.” The company’s facility in Luling, Texas, will utilize these advanced methods to produce thousands of SRMs, including those for the GMLRS.

The partnership operates on a cost-matching basis, with government funding complemented by private sector investments. This collaborative effort aligns with the Army’s mission to ensure a consistent and ample supply of essential munitions. The Advanced Manufacturing Pathfinder project, managed by OSC, supports various defense initiatives, including the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD(R&E)) and the Army’s Program Executive Office for Missiles and Space (PEO MS).

As part of this initiative, X-Bow will work alongside KBR subsidiary Kord Technologies, which will provide systems engineering and technical assistance.

Growth and Collaboration in Defense Sector

The announcement of this investment follows X-Bow Systems’ successful completion of its Series B financing round, which raised over $105 million as of May 2023. A significant portion of this funding was led by Lockheed Martin, which has established a strategic partnership with X-Bow. This collaboration aims to expedite X-Bow’s development as an independent supplier of SRMs and related services for Lockheed Martin’s existing and future projects.

By investing in advanced manufacturing capabilities, the US Army and X-Bow Systems are not only addressing immediate production needs but also paving the way for long-term sustainability in the defense sector. This initiative highlights the importance of innovation and strategic partnerships in maintaining a robust industrial base for national security.
