In a weekend of exciting matches, two players from Shetland made headlines as they featured prominently in Golspie Sutherland’s clash against Fort William. Goalkeeper Henry Oldbury captained the team while fellow former Spurs player Brandon McKay played in midfield. Unfortunately for Golspie, they were unable to secure a victory, losing 3-0 to Fort William. This match followed a promising start to their season, having previously won 2-1 against St Duthus last Wednesday.

Strong Performance by Brechin City

In contrast, Brechin City continued their impressive run in the Highland League, achieving a resounding 5-0 victory over Buckie Thistle. Late substitute Spencer Moreland contributed to Brechin’s success as they maintained their perfect record, now boasting six wins from six matches. This achievement has placed them three points ahead of Brora Rangers at the top of the league table.

In the Ocean Kinetics Premier League, Spurs are set to face local rivals Thistle tonight, seeking to gain an advantage in the title race. A win would position Spurs three points clear of Whitedale, who currently share the top spot but have a game in hand. If both teams secure victories in their remaining fixtures, a play-off will be necessary to determine the champions. This evening’s match at Gilbertson Park promises to be a thrilling encounter, with Scalloway hosting Ness at Fraser Park and Celtic making the journey to Whalsay.

Competitive Reserve League and Ladies Day Event

The DITT Reserve League also sees Spurs B and Whitedale B vying for the title. A recent 3-3 draw between Spurs and Whitedale keeps Spurs at the top on goal difference, though Whitedale holds a game in hand against Delting. The final matches of the season are crucial, with Whitedale B facing Thistle B and the milkbags competing against Celtic B this Wednesday. If Whitedale B wins their last two matches, they will secure the championship for the third consecutive year.

In a lighter sporting event, the Clocktower Ladies Day took place at the Lerwick Outdoor Bowling Club, where 16 participants enjoyed a round robin competition in the Hong Kong pairs format. After a morning of mixed weather, the sun broke through, providing a pleasant atmosphere for the matches. Each team played five games, and after thorough competition, Sarah Polson and Debs Morgan emerged victorious, winning four games. The second place went to Caroline Smith and Angela Gifford, with prizes awarded by Clocktower owner Brian Smith.

Looking ahead, Shetland’s men’s rugby team is set to begin their season with an away match against Mackie on August 30. Meanwhile, the Shetland Valkyries will kick off their campaign at home against Highland the following week. As the sporting calendar heats up, excitement continues to build across various competitions.
