Black Hawk College Unveils $29 Million CTE Facility for Future Careers

Black Hawk College has officially opened a newly renovated career and technical education (CTE) facility, designed to enhance vocational training for students. The project, which cost approximately $29 million, transformed an existing campus building into a state-of-the-art center featuring 66,000 square feet of educational spaces dedicated to disciplines such as e-sports, cybersecurity, forensics, industrial maintenance, and mechatronics.

The facility also includes a specialized 4,000 square-foot area for welding, fabrication, and grinding. Construction began in 2022, and the center opened its doors for fall classes this month, marking a significant milestone for the college and the local community.

Preparing Students for a Competitive Workforce

Steven Frommelt, executive vice president of finance and administration at Black Hawk College, emphasized the importance of this facility in preparing students for their future careers. He noted that students will have access to current technologies used in the workplace, allowing for practical application of their skills. “It’ll be the current technology that we have in the working world, so they’re able to come in and have a practical application,” Frommelt stated. Additionally, he highlighted that the college aims to be the lowest-cost provider of education in the region, further supporting local students.

Frommelt also mentioned that the renovated spaces could accommodate future programs, including community offerings such as College for Kids. The design of the facility is flexible, allowing for adaptations as technology evolves, including advancements in artificial intelligence.

A Vision for the Future

Jeremy Thomas, president of Black Hawk College, expressed optimism about the facility’s potential impact on students and the surrounding Quad-Cities area. “I hope students are excited,” he said. “In fact, I know they will be. They’re getting to get trained in a world-class facility. We’re investing in them. We’re investing in the Quad-Cities.”

Thomas believes that this facility will provide students with valuable training opportunities that will enhance their employability. The college’s commitment to developing its CTE programs reflects a broader trend in education to bridge the skills gap and meet the demands of modern industries.
