Epworth Postmaster Richard Haley Honoured with British Empire Medal

Richard Haley, the postmaster of Epworth, has been awarded the British Empire Medal for his significant contributions to the local community. This recognition is part of the New Year’s Honour lists and was presented to him by Professor Dame Hilary Chapman DBE on behalf of King Charles at a ceremony held at the Doncaster Mansion House.

Haley, who has dedicated over 32 years to the Post Office, has been the postmaster at Epworth since 2012. Prior to this, he managed the Beckett Road Post Office in Doncaster from 1993 to 2008. His commitment to service is underscored by his willingness to travel more than 25 miles to collect special deliveries for customers needing urgent items.

The British Empire Medal was established in 1922 to honour hands-on community service across the UK. Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters BEM. Haley’s award highlights the essential role he plays in the village of Epworth, where he is regarded as a beloved figure among residents.

Joanne Fryatt, the Post Office Area Manager, expressed delight at Haley receiving this honour, stating, “It was a privilege to attend his award ceremony.” She emphasised his exceptional customer service, noting that he often engages with customers by name, which fosters a welcoming atmosphere.

Haley himself remarked, “I have always said that being a postmaster is not a job, it is a vocation. I can’t imagine doing any other role as I enjoy doing it so much.” His dedication extends beyond the confines of the post office, as he continually strives to make his customers feel valued and appreciated.
