WhatsApp Urges Users to Follow 6 Steps for Enhanced Security

WhatsApp has issued a call to action for its users, urging them to follow six essential steps to enhance the security of their accounts and protect their privacy. This advisory applies to both iOS and Android users and is part of the messaging platform’s ongoing commitment to user safety, as outlined in their Help Center.
Steps to Secure Your Account
To safeguard your account, WhatsApp emphasizes the importance of vigilance against unsolicited communications. Users who have enabled two-step verification should be particularly cautious if they receive unexpected emails requesting a reset of their two-step verification PIN or registration code. WhatsApp warns that clicking on any links in such emails could lead to unauthorized access to your account, as someone may be attempting to gain control over your phone number on the platform.
If you encounter a message stating, “Your phone number was registered with WhatsApp on a new device” when opening the app, it is crucial to follow the on-screen instructions to recover your account. For further guidance, WhatsApp encourages users to visit their account recovery page.
Beware of Unofficial Apps
This advisory is not the first of its kind from WhatsApp. The company has previously alerted users to the dangers of unofficial versions of their app. According to their Help Center, a warning message may appear stating, “This app is fake.” WhatsApp explains that if users receive a Play Protect Warning from Google, they are likely using an altered version of the app developed by third parties. Such versions violate WhatsApp’s Terms of Service and pose significant security risks.
To ensure the integrity of their messaging experience, Android users are advised to uninstall any unofficial versions of WhatsApp. They should then navigate to the official website to download either WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business and re-register their phone numbers. WhatsApp has cautioned that users may not be able to transfer their chat history when switching from unofficial apps, as these versions are not supported by the company.
In light of these developments, WhatsApp continues to prioritize user security and privacy, encouraging proactive measures to maintain the integrity of accounts across its platform.
