University of Miami Enforces Restrictions on Personal Mobility Devices

The University of Miami is implementing new restrictions on personal electric mobility devices, including electric scooters and e-bikes, due to safety concerns and the increasing risk of battery-related fires. Effective August 19, 2023, students and staff will be prohibited from riding or parking such devices on sidewalks, breezeways, and other pedestrian-heavy areas within the Coral Gables campus.
The announcement, made by the university’s Parking and Transportation Department, highlights the institution’s commitment to ensuring a safer campus environment. “We’ve seen a growing number of incidents involving pedestrian collisions, blocked emergency routes, and battery fires,” the department stated in a press release. “This policy is about protecting the safety and well-being of our community.”
New Guidelines and Growing Concerns
The crackdown on personal mobility devices aligns with a broader national trend as universities across the country address the challenges posed by the rapid proliferation of electric scooters and e-bikes. The University of Miami’s decision comes amid rising concerns about distracted riding. Students frequently navigate the campus on scooters while wearing earbuds and focusing on their phones, increasing the risk of accidents for both riders and pedestrians.
Under the new guidelines, the university will also maintain its ban on shared scooter services, such as Bird and Lime, and has no immediate plans to reconsider this policy. The university’s approach aims to mitigate incidents that can lead to injuries or safety hazards on campus.
The initiative underscores the ongoing conversation about safety in urban environments and the implications of emerging transportation technologies. As personal electric vehicles become more common, institutions are increasingly challenged to create effective regulations that prioritize community safety while accommodating the needs of users.
For additional information regarding the full policy details and a new micromobility parking map, individuals are encouraged to visit the university’s official website.
