Tragedy Strikes as 38 Dead in Ha Long Bay Tourist Boat Capsize

A devastating incident in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, has left at least 38 people dead following the capsizing of a tourist boat on October 7, 2023. The vessel, known as the Wonder Sea, was carrying 48 tourists and five crew members when it encountered severe weather conditions, leading to the tragic loss of life.

According to survivor Dang Anh Tuan, passengers urgently requested the captain to return to shore as a storm approached. Despite their pleas, the crew insisted they were close to their destination. Tuan described the harrowing moments just before the boat capsized, stating, “It rained for about 15 minutes, and then the boat started to shake vigorously. Tables and chairs were jostled around, and seconds later the boat overturned.”

As the vessel began to take on water, Tuan recounted a desperate struggle for survival. “I tried to breathe. But more water came in. I took a deep breath, got rid of my life vest and dove down. I saw a streak of light and followed it to swim out, escaping the boat, and then I climbed on the overturned boat to look for help,” he told the Associated Press.

Tuan and three others clung to the upturned boat for approximately two hours until rescue teams arrived. Although rescuers managed to save 11 individuals, one person later succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Among the rescued was a 14-year-old boy who had been trapped for four hours inside the hull of the boat. The majority of the passengers were tourists from Hanoi, including around 20 children.

Tuan was on holiday with a group of 11 university friends, of whom only three survived the disaster. He sustained minor cuts, while one friend suffered severe head injuries and another was injured by shattered glass while escaping. Tragically, nine members of their group did not survive, including one man whose wife and three-year-old son also drowned.

The capsizing occurred due to severe winds, as reported by the VNExpress newspaper. The incident has drawn attention to safety protocols for tourist vessels in the region, especially as a tropical storm, Storm Wipha, is predicted to strike northern Vietnam, including the coast of Ha Long Bay, in the coming days.

As the community mourns, the incident raises critical questions about maritime safety and the protocols that govern tourist activities in vulnerable environments. The government is expected to conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the capsizing, as families of the victims seek answers and accountability.

A tragic incident occurred on July 3, 2023, when a British teacher, Janet Easton, aged 68, was crushed to death by a nursing elephant during a safari in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. Alongside her, another tourist, Alison Taylor, 67, from New Zealand, also lost her life in the shocking event. Both women were part of a guided safari trip when the elephant charged unexpectedly.

Witnesses reported that tour guides attempted to intervene and protect the tourists. They fired shots in an effort to deter the elephant, but unfortunately, their actions were futile. Local police chief Robertson Mweemba confirmed the tragic outcomes, stating, “They both died on the spot.” He emphasized the difficulty of managing wild animals, particularly when tourists engage in activities such as feeding them.

Tributes Pour In for a Cherished Educator

The school community at Titus Salt School in Baildon, Bradford, has expressed profound sorrow following the news of Easton’s death. Headteacher Phil Temple released a heartfelt statement, describing her as an “intrepid traveller” and a “much-loved” friend. Easton worked at the school from September 1983 until her retirement in August 2022, dedicating nearly four decades to educating students.

Temple remarked on her legacy, noting, “Janice was a highly skilled Chemistry teacher and was for many years responsible for transition to high school. In these roles and others, Janice had a profound impact on generations of pupils and students in the local community.” He added that she was not only a dedicated professional but also a passionate traveler and photographer, leaving a lasting impression on both her colleagues and students.

Support and Investigation Following the Incident

The safari was conducted by the tour operator Expert Africa, which described the incident as “deeply tragic” and “highly unusual” for the region. Managing director Chris McIntyre expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, stating, “Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the travellers involved.” He assured that the company is working closely with local authorities and consular services to support those affected and to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The safari experience at South Luangwa National Park is typically regarded as safe, making this incident particularly shocking. As investigations continue, local authorities are expected to review safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The loss of Janet Easton and Alison Taylor serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters, highlighting the need for caution and respect when engaging with the natural world.

Nine-Year-Old Calls for Alcohol Ban at Kids’ Football Tournaments

editorial

A nine-year-old boy, Ronnie Edward Preston, has taken a stand against alcohol consumption at children’s football tournaments following a distressing incident during a recent game. After witnessing multiple altercations among parents at a tournament held on March 2, 2024, at Woodstock Park in Sittingbourne, Ronnie expressed his concerns by writing a heartfelt letter to the government advocating for a ban on alcohol at such events.

During the tournament, Ronnie observed “three fights” between parents, which left him and his friends feeling “scared.” Recognizing the negative impact of adult behavior on children, he decided to voice his concerns. With the support of his mother, Belinda Collins, who coaches an under-10 team at Aylesford Colts, he composed a letter outlining his feelings about the situation.

The letter gained significant attention after Belinda shared it on a Facebook page dedicated to underage football. While many praised Ronnie’s initiative, some individuals took to social media to criticize Belinda, accusing her of writing the letter herself and misrepresenting her son’s thoughts. In response to these accusations, she firmly stated, “I have done no such thing. He told me what he wanted to say, and I typed the letter up for him.”

Belinda expressed her pride in Ronnie’s courage to address an issue he found unacceptable. She reflected on the challenges of witnessing negative behavior at youth sports, saying, “As a mother, it’s hard watching and being subjected to behavior that isn’t wholly positive.” She emphasized the importance of supporting children from the sidelines and fostering a positive environment during their games.

The poignant letter written by Ronnie highlighted his dismay at the adult confrontations he witnessed. In his own words, he described the atmosphere, stating, “I saw three fights between parents. I know it’s not really anyone’s fault like the organisers or the teams, but it was really sad.” He articulated his belief that the presence of alcohol exacerbated the situation, saying, “I did say to my mummy that I don’t think selling beer at kids football tournaments is a good idea.”

Ronnie’s letter concluded with a plea for adults to set a better example for the children, stating, “Grown-ups should be setting a good example and cheering us on, not arguing and being cross.” He signed off by identifying himself as “A nine-year-old footballer who just wants to enjoy my game.”

This incident has sparked conversations about the appropriateness of alcohol consumption at children’s sporting events, urging parents and organizers to consider the potential impact on young athletes. As discussions around this topic continue, Ronnie’s call for change emphasizes the need for a supportive and safe environment for children to engage in sports.

Britain’s Dirtiest Beaches Exposed: A Warning for Holidaymakers

editorial

Published

on

As families prepare for summer holidays, warnings have emerged about some of Britain’s dirtiest beaches, which may spoil their seaside escapes. According to data from waste management experts at BusinessWaste.co.uk, beaches littered with plastic waste and other debris include Skegness Beach in Lincolnshire, Margate Main Sands, and Formby Beach in Merseyside. This information serves as a crucial heads-up for holidaymakers seeking a clean, enjoyable beach experience.

The report highlights Skegness Beach as the most littered, with complaints about both human and animal waste. A review from June 2025 on TripAdvisor expressed frustration about the conditions: “Avoid the grass dunes between the car park and the beach. Not only do you have to dodge the dog waste, but also human waste and serviettes covered in faeces left for you to tread in.” Another review lamented, “Unfortunately, on the walk down the beach, we passed a lot of trash, dirty nappies and baby wipes strewn about the place in one area, and broken glass.”

Despite such criticisms, Skegness maintains its popularity as a holiday destination. One satisfied visitor commented in May 2025, “Skegness is a proper seaside resort. It has everything that you expect from a trip to the coast and a lot more besides.” The review praised its iconic Clock Tower and attractions, while also highlighting the beach’s golden sands and local food vendors.

Similar issues plague Margate Main Sands, where visitors reported broken glass and unsightly litter. Complaints echoed those of Skegness, indicating an ongoing problem with cleanliness at these popular locations. Formby Beach, although generally well-reviewed, also faces criticism for litter accumulation. One visitor remarked that the car park was full by 10:30 and the beach was already crowded and littered.

Further complicating matters, last year a UK beach received a ‘Brown Flag’ designation, marking it as one of the dirtiest in the country. Porthluney Beach in Cornwall, despite its picturesque setting, was identified as having serious cleanliness issues. An analysis by Holiday Park Guru utilizing Environment Agency summer water quality data revealed that Porthluney Beach harboured bacteria such as e-coli from sewage and other waste, resulting in its poor rating.

A visitor’s experience at Porthluney Beach in September 2023 further illustrated the challenges faced by beachgoers. Sarah T. described her ordeal with parking fines, stating, “After leaving Cornwall had a £100 parking fine, appealed, to no avail and of course threw my parking ticket away so no evidence.” She expressed her determination not to return, citing the numerous negative reviews regarding parking enforcement.

The findings from these reports underscore a pressing need for local authorities and beach management to address the issue of litter on Britain’s beaches. As families head to the coast in search of relaxation and fun, ensuring clean and safe beach environments should be a priority. With the summer season approaching, the emphasis on cleanliness will be essential for preserving the reputation of these beloved seaside destinations.
