Foreign Office Issues Urgent Safety Guidance for Tourists in Cyprus

The UK Foreign Office has issued an urgent advisory for British tourists currently in Cyprus, following a recent drone strike at RAF Akrotiri that raised security concerns for military personnel stationed there. Tourists are urged to take five crucial steps to ensure their safety amid escalating tensions in the region.

On Monday, the drone strike at RAF Akrotiri prompted the cancellation of 60 flights to and from Cypriot airports, further complicating travel plans for visitors. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) emphasized the need for vigilance, recommending that tourists keep their departure plans under review and ensure their travel documents are current.

Key Safety Recommendations for Tourists

In light of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the FCDO outlines five key actions for British nationals in Cyprus:

1. Familiarize yourself with guidance on “how to prepare for a crisis” available on the FCDO website, which includes advice on emergency supplies.
2. Sign up for FCDO Travel Advice email alerts to stay informed.
3. Monitor local and international media for updates on the situation.
4. Register for local information alerts and heed the advice of local authorities.
5. Regularly review your departure plans and ensure all travel documents are up to date.

The FCDO’s caution comes as the UK government prepares to reinforce its military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean. Defence Secretary John Healey announced that the Royal Navy’s HMS Dragon, a Type 45 air defence destroyer equipped with the Sea Viper anti-air missile system, will be deployed from Portsmouth to enhance security in the region.

Healey remarked, “HMS Dragon brings world-class air defence capability, and our Wildcat helicopters are armed with Martlet missiles to counter the growing drone threat.” He expressed pride in the professionalism of British Armed Forces personnel, who have been actively engaged in protecting allies and safeguarding British interests in the area.

Ongoing Regional Tensions
