Premier League Players Face Racist Abuse, Calls for Action Intensify

On March 10, 2024, Premier League players Tolu Arokodare and Romaine Mundle were subjected to racist abuse on social media, highlighting ongoing issues of discrimination in professional football. This incident capped what has been described as an “appalling weekend,” wherein four players reported similar abuse online.

Arokodare, a striker for Wolverhampton Wanderers, missed a penalty during his team’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. Following the match, he received several racist messages from various social media accounts. Mundle, who plays for Sunderland, faced similar attacks after coming on as a substitute in his team’s 3-1 loss to Fulham. These incidents follow the abuse directed at Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana and Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri after their teams drew 1-1 on March 9, 2024.

Calls for Action from Anti-Discrimination Groups

In response to these incidents, the anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out condemned the abuse and expressed solidarity with Arokodare and Mundle. The organization issued a statement emphasizing the need for action against such behavior: “This has been an appalling weekend after four players called out the racist abuse they’ve received on social media. But the sad fact is, we know it happens regularly. The message from them is loud and clear: action must follow.”

The Premier League also reacted to the incidents, pledging to support investigations into the abuse. They committed to enforcing “serious consequences” for those found guilty of racist behavior, reiterating that “football is for everyone – there is no room for racism.”

Both clubs have condemned the actions of the perpetrators. Wolverhampton stated, “We are disgusted by numerous instances of racist abuse from multiple perpetrators. Tolu has our full and unwavering support.” The club reported the abusive posts to relevant social media platforms and will collaborate with authorities to identify those responsible for the messages.

Players Demand Accountability

Arokodare voiced his frustration through an Instagram story, stating, “It’s still unbelievable to me that we’re playing in a time where people have so much freedom to communicate such racism without any consequences.” He called for collective action to ensure that individuals who engage in such behavior face punishment.

Similarly, Sunderland released a statement denouncing the abuse, asserting that such conduct would not be tolerated. “The abhorrent behaviour displayed by multiple individuals is unacceptable. These individuals do not represent Sunderland AFC, our values, or our community,” the statement read.

The incidents come amid heightened scrutiny of racism in football. Just last week, UEFA began investigating allegations made by Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, who claimed he was racially abused during a Champions League match against Benfica. The accused player, Gianluca Prestianni, has denied the allegations.

Fofana shared images of the messages he received and expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of anti-racism campaigns, stating, “2026, it’s still the same thing, nothing changes. These people are never punished.” Mejbri echoed similar sentiments, urging for education on racism: “It’s 2026 and there are still people like that. Educate yourself and your kids, please.”

As football continues to grapple with these issues, the urgent need for effective measures against racism remains a pressing concern for players, clubs, and fans alike.
