World Premiere: Julian Brave NoiseCat’s Coyote Story

On February 21 and 22, PS21 Center for Contemporary Performance will host the world premiere of Julian Brave NoiseCat’s “We Survived the Night: A Coyote Story in Four Parts” at the Spencertown Academy Arts Center in Spencertown, N.Y. This production is part of The Dark, PS21’s winter festival. NoiseCat, a storyteller from the Secwépemc and St’at’imc nations, explores Indigenous narratives through the Coyote Story tradition, a significant oral practice historically prevalent from Central America to Western Canada.

The one-man show integrates song, dance, and oratory, aiming to revive and celebrate this ancient art form. NoiseCat’s work draws inspiration from his bestselling book “We Survived the Night,” which has garnered critical acclaim. Performances are scheduled for Saturday, February 21, at 19:00 and Sunday, February 22, at 16:00. Tickets and additional details are available online.

Concerts and Cabarets: Music to Inspire

The FreshGrass Institute and Studio 9 will feature artist-in-residence Daniel Kleederman in concert on February 21 at 19:00. Kleederman, known for his emotive performances and previous work with indie artist Bartees Strange, will be joined by special guest Benjamin Jaffe. The concert will take place at Studio 9, located at 18 Veazie Street, North Adams.

As part of the Pittsfield’s 10×10 Upstreet Arts Festival, Berkshire Jazz will present “10 by Satch: The Music of Louis Armstrong” on February 20 at 19:30. This cabaret, featuring the New Black Eagle Jazz Band at the Proprietor’s Lodge in Pittsfield, pays tribute to one of the most influential figures in American music. The band has been celebrated for its authentic recreations of early jazz, captivating audiences for over 50 years.

Film Screening and Workshops: Engage and Create

On February 22 at 11:00, the Du Bois Freedom Center and Berkshire International Film Festival will screen “BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions” at The Triplex in Great Barrington. This unique film, adapted from Kahlil Joseph’s acclaimed video art installation, weaves together fiction and history, featuring discussions on Black consciousness. Following the screening, a talkback will include insights from Dr. Saidiya Hartman, a professor at Columbia University.

Additionally, from February 19 to April 9, Spencertown Academy will host a memoir workshop led by Elizabeth Diggs. This course, designed for individuals at all writing levels, encourages participants to craft their personal stories using various mediums. Diggs, a noted playwright and educator, has received numerous accolades for her contributions to the arts.
