Pennsylvania Couple Discovers Marriage Certificate Truth Before Anniversary

A couple from Pennsylvania uncovered a surprising detail about their marriage after their son-in-law conducted a search through Ancestry.com. Ed Wagner, aged 95, and his wife Sally, 92, had anticipated celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary this week. However, the discovery revealed that they actually tied the knot on February 9, 1952, making it a 74-year marriage instead of the milestone they had planned for.

The couple had intended to mark their diamond anniversary with family celebrations. Upon learning the true date of their wedding, their son-in-law accessed the official marriage certificate, bringing a mix of humor and slight disappointment. “When you’re married this long, who cares?” Sally remarked, reflecting their light-hearted approach to the situation while sitting alongside Ed in their Greensburg home.

From High School Sweethearts to Lasting Companionship

Ed and Sally first met as teenagers at East Huntingdon High School. Their love story took them across state lines to Virginia for their wedding, as Sally’s mother refused to sign the necessary marriage papers in Pennsylvania. They married just before Ed was drafted into the Army to serve in the Korean War. Ed humorously recalled his reasoning for the marriage: “I told her, ‘We might as well get married. That way, you’ll be getting the money from the service if anything happens to me.'”

Nine months after their wedding, Ed was deployed to Korea, leaving Sally to manage life at home while several of her brothers also served in the military. Following the war, the couple returned to Pennsylvania, where they built a life together in Westmoreland County. They have lived in their modest white home in Greensburg for the past 68 years.

A Life Filled with Love and Challenges

Over the years, Ed and Sally raised three children and welcomed nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren into their family. Their journey has not been without challenges; they faced heartbreak with the passing of their eldest son in 2017 due to a lifelong heart condition. Additionally, Sally underwent heart surgery in 2021, and Ed has battled health issues, including macular degeneration, which has left him nearly blind in one eye. He also lost a toe to infection two years ago.

Despite these difficulties, the couple remains devoted to one another. They continue to cook meals together, attend church, and enjoy long hours on their porch during the summer, earning them the affectionate nickname “the porch people.”

When asked about the secret to their long-lasting marriage, Ed responded with a touch of humor, saying, “I didn’t die.” He then added more sincerely, “I don’t know what I would have done without her.” Sally’s gentle touch on Ed’s hand underscored their mutual support, as she affirmed, “We’re both here for each other, and the love is still here.”

As Ed and Sally prepare for their delayed anniversary celebrations, their story serves as a reminder of enduring love and companionship through life’s trials and tribulations.
