Woman Loses 2 Stone on Mounjaro, Faces Unexpected Hair Loss

When Louise Atkinson began using Mounjaro, she was drawn in by the potential for significant weight loss and improved health. After a lifetime of struggling with diets, the medication promised a solution to her weight issues, alongside benefits such as lower blood pressure and improved joint health. However, her journey took an unexpected turn as she faced troubling hair loss after shedding a total of two stone over six months.

Initially, Atkinson experienced the desired weight loss, averaging between 1 to 2 pounds a week. She maintained a nutrient-rich diet and diligently took various vitamin and mineral supplements. Despite her careful approach, she began to notice alarming clumps of hair falling out, raising concerns about potential side effects linked to the medication.

The hair loss prompted a wave of anxiety. Atkinson discovered that many users of GLP-1 medications like Mounjaro were sharing similar experiences online, with numerous posts from women expressing their fears of losing hair. While some suggested nutritional deficiencies might be to blame, others pointed to hormonal changes triggered by the drug.

A 2025 study conducted in the USA identified a 50 percent increase in the risk of hair loss among women taking semaglutide, a similar GLP-1 medication. The study reported a 30 percent increase in cases of telogen effluvium, a temporary hair loss condition, and a worrying 62 percent increase in the risk of androgenic alopecia, a genetic condition leading to progressive hair thinning.

Despite these findings, Adrian Health, a professor of medicine and consultant endocrinologist, stated that the hair loss associated with GLP-1s could primarily stem from nutritional deficiencies rather than hormonal changes. Health experts like Spencer Kobren, founder of the American Hair Loss Association, cautioned users about the possibility of these medications triggering early onset female pattern baldness, especially for those with a family history of hair loss.

With concerns mounting, Atkinson sought advice from various specialists. A blood test at Superdrug revealed that while her nutrient levels were acceptable, her vitamin B12 and vitamin D levels were on the lower side of normal. This finding led her to seek further evaluations, including a scalp analysis at a local salon and a consultation with renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley.

During her consultation, Susie Aikin-Sneath, a consultant trichologist, reassured Atkinson that her hair loss was likely attributable to telogen effluvium rather than androgenic alopecia. She explained that stress and nutritional deficiencies could impact hair growth and that recent personal challenges, including the loss of her father-in-law and her dog undergoing major surgery, might have contributed to her hair shedding.

The combination of stress and altered nutritional absorption due to the medication could have created a perfect storm for hair loss. Nutritional expert Rob Hobson emphasized the importance of managing stress levels and ensuring adequate nutrient intake, particularly protein, to support hair health.

To mitigate her hair loss while continuing her weight loss journey, Atkinson received practical advice. Ensuring a high-protein, nutrient-dense diet was essential. Adding a daily multivitamin specifically designed for hair health, aiming for optimal levels of essential vitamins and minerals, was also recommended.

In the months following her initial hair loss, Atkinson noticed a significant reduction in shedding, and new curls began to grow back around her hairline. This experience highlighted the complexities surrounding weight loss medications and their potential side effects, especially in women.

While social media advertisements promoting hair loss solutions abound, experts warn against quick fixes and urge individuals to seek professional advice instead. As Atkinson learned, addressing hair loss is multifaceted, requiring a careful balance of nutrition, stress management, and medical insight.

The journey through weight loss and unexpected hair loss serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding both the benefits and risks associated with new medications. For those navigating similar challenges, consulting with medical professionals and maintaining a focus on overall health remains vital.
