Hamilton Town Centre Secures £20 Million for Regeneration Efforts
Hamilton town centre is poised to receive a significant investment of £20 million from a UK Government-funded initiative aimed at revitalizing areas in need. The funding comes through the Pride of Place programme, which targets neighbourhoods suffering from high levels of deprivation and aims to bolster social infrastructure.
The South Lanarkshire Council confirmed that this investment will be allocated over a ten-year period, focusing on community engagement and regeneration. Local residents will have a direct influence on how the funds are spent, ensuring that the projects align with their needs and aspirations.
This initiative is designed to build stronger communities and create vibrant spaces. It empowers residents to actively participate in shaping the future of their environment. The council plans to establish a new Hamilton Town Centre Neighbourhood Board, which will be led by an independent chair, to oversee the allocation of resources.
The appointment of this chair is expected to be completed by March 31, 2024. The final decision will rest with the council’s chief executive, in consultation with local MP Imogen Walker and the council leader. Once in place, the chair will facilitate the formation of the neighbourhood board, which will consist of residents, community organisations, businesses, and other stakeholders.
Community Engagement and Future Planning
The neighbourhood board will play a critical role in determining the prioritization of projects and the distribution of funding. It is projected to be fully established by July 2026, with extensive community engagement planned throughout the year.
By November 2026, the board is required to submit a comprehensive Pride in Place plan to the UK Government. This document will outline a ten-year vision for Hamilton town centre, detailing how the allocated funding will be utilized in the initial four years. The government is expected to provide approval for the plan in spring 2027.
Funding is set to commence in the 2027/28 fiscal year and will be divided between capital projects and ongoing operational expenses. This new investment supplements an existing £8 million already approved for Hamilton town centre in the council’s budget for 2025/26. Future funding beyond 2028/29 will depend on upcoming UK spending reviews, which may influence subsequent allocations.
The Pride of Place programme represents a meaningful opportunity for Hamilton to address its challenges, with a clear focus on community-led development and sustainable growth. As the local government initiates this vital project, the future of Hamilton town centre looks promising.
