Labour Mayor Criticizes Anonymous Attacks on Andy Burnham

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is facing a wave of criticism from within his own party, as Labour Mayor Steve Rotheram has publicly condemned anonymous briefings that disparage Burnham’s political ambitions. This internal conflict arises against the backdrop of Labour’s decision to prevent Burnham from standing in the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election scheduled for February 26, 2026.

The decision to block Burnham’s candidacy has ignited tensions within the Labour Party, with party leader Keir Starmer asserting that allowing Burnham to run could lead to a costly by-election for the Manchester mayoralty, potentially impacting both party finances and taxpayer resources.

Rotheram’s Strong Words

In a post on social media platform X, Rotheram described the anonymous briefings as “gutless” and criticized those who choose to attack Burnham without revealing their identities. He expressed frustration over the ongoing internal strife, stating, “Enough already. I’ve kept my counsel so far because there were assurances from the prime minister that anonymous briefings against Andy Burnham would stop.”

Rotheram called for accountability, noting, “These gutless people hide behind the cloak of anonymity – just like the keyboard warriors they rail against.” He challenged those attacking Burnham to engage in open debate regarding their views on political power and the contributions made by Burnham throughout his career.

He further referenced the Hillsborough disaster, saying, “If they want to know about the bravery it took to break ranks in cabinet to get an independent panel to investigate the unlawful killing of 97 British citizens – bring it on.” Rotheram emphasized that these anonymous attacks only serve to benefit Labour’s opponents and urged his colleagues to cease such behavior for the sake of party unity.

Burnham’s Response and Party Dynamics

Burnham has expressed his disappointment at being excluded from the Gorton and Denton race, highlighting a lack of support from the Labour Party during his three mayoral campaigns. He has asserted that the party has not provided him with the backing he needed to succeed.

In the wake of this controversy, Labour has announced that Manchester councillor Angeliki Stogia will be the party’s candidate for the Gorton and Denton by-election. Congratulating her on X, Burnham stated, “I know you will do a great job. I will be there for you whenever you need me.”

The ongoing internal conflicts within the Labour Party reflect broader tensions as the party navigates its positioning and leadership dynamics in the run-up to upcoming elections. As Burnham continues to voice his concerns, the implications of these internal disputes remain to be seen, particularly regarding their impact on party unity and electoral success.
