Netflix Launches Major Brazilian Initiative with New Oscar Deal
Netflix has announced a significant partnership in Brazil, securing a pay-1 deal for the Oscar-nominated film, The Secret Agent. This news was revealed by co-CEO Greg Peters during the opening of the streaming giant’s new and larger offices in São Paulo on January 27, 2026. The event celebrated Netflix’s 15 years of operation in Brazil and marked a strategic move to deepen its engagement with local filmmakers.
Peters highlighted the company’s commitment to nurturing Brazilian cinema by contributing to the production costs of the thriller, which stars acclaimed actor Wagner Moura. The film is nominated for several prestigious awards, including Best Picture and International Feature Film, as well as a nomination for lead actor for Moura. “We support Brazilian films in multiple ways because we want to be the best partners and stay flexible so local producers can decide the best way to bring their projects to life,” Peters stated.
Netflix has also formed partnerships with various Brazilian production companies on multiple projects. These include collaborations with Filmes de Plástico on the new film by director Gabriel Martins, who previously directed Brazil’s 2023 Oscars submission. Other partnerships announced involve Barry Company and Biônica Filmes for the film by Daniel Rezende, one of 15 contenders for the Oscars this season, as well as Conspiração on the upcoming comedy by Arthur Fontes. Additionally, Netflix is working with LighHouse on a romance film by Marcelo Antunez.
Over the past three years, Netflix has collaborated with more than 40 Brazilian production companies, generating over 12,000 jobs through films and series that debuted in 2025. The global viewership of Netflix’s Brazilian titles surged by 60% between July and December 2025, reflecting the platform’s growing influence in the region.
Looking ahead, Netflix’s 2026 offerings will feature the series 1970 FIFA World Cup, a limited series about Brazil’s triumphant football team, along with a spin-off series from the popular franchise 3%. Another notable production on the horizon is the feature adaptation of Paulo Coelho‘s acclaimed 1987 novel, The Alchemist.
Netflix Brazil’s new office stands out as the only facility in Latin America fully occupied by the company, reinforcing its commitment to the Brazilian market. As the streaming service continues to expand its footprint in the region, it aims to solidify relationships with local creators and contribute significantly to the country’s film industry.
