School Lockdown Sparks Fear After Hoax Email Threat
Students at Holly Lodge Girls’ College in West Derby experienced significant distress following a hoax email that prompted the school to initiate a lockdown on January 19, 2024. The malicious communication was received at 13:39, leading to immediate action by school officials and a call to Merseyside Police.
According to police reports, the email was determined to be a hoax, although its impact on the students was profound. Many pupils were reported as “severely distressed,” with some crying and shaking as they followed instructions to hide under desks. In one classroom, students were advised to barricade the door with chairs to enhance their safety.
In the aftermath of the incident, Andy Keen, headteacher at Holly Lodge, explained that the lockdown lasted approximately 50 minutes, concluding when students were dismissed safely at 15:20. Keen expressed confidence in the school’s response, describing it as “robust and efficient.”
Police Response and Community Reassurance
Both Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council issued a joint statement, reassuring parents and guardians that local schools are equipped with established safety procedures to manage potential threats. They emphasized that there were no credible threats identified and that ongoing investigations suggested multiple schools in the area had been targeted with similar malicious emails.
A spokesperson for the police highlighted their commitment to student and staff safety: “The safety of students and staff is our highest priority. We would like to thank parents and carers for their patience and understanding.” They urged the community to continue following guidance provided by individual schools.
Keen acknowledged the distress such threats can cause. He noted the importance of evaluating the school’s response to this unprecedented situation, stating that feedback from staff, students, and parents will be taken into account to improve future procedures.
Concerns Over Lockdown Procedures
The serious nature of the incident has reignited discussions about the effectiveness of current lockdown protocols. An insider at the school voiced concerns about the adequacy of existing safeguarding measures, particularly highlighting a lack of lockdown drills in recent years. This incident has raised questions about preparedness in light of previous attacks, such as the Southport attack in 2024.
Keen reiterated that the school acted in accordance with their Critical Incident Plan and followed police advice throughout the incident. He remarked, “Sadly, such threats to schools are not unusual and are designed to cause disruption and worry.” The leadership team’s actions were aimed at prioritizing the well-being of students and staff during the crisis.
As investigations continue, authorities remain committed to ensuring that students and school staff feel safe and secure within their educational environments.
