Baker Mayfield Criticizes Former Coach Kevin Stefanski on Social Media
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has publicly criticized his former coach, Kevin Stefanski, after the latter was described as having a “dumpster fire” situation at quarterback during his time with the Cleveland Browns. The comments originated from a post by an Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter, which highlighted that both Mayfield and fellow quarterback Deshaun Watson struggled under Stefanski’s leadership.
On Tuesday, Mayfield responded to the report on social media, expressing his discontent with the characterization. He wrote, “Failed is quite the reach, pal,” emphasizing his disagreement with the assessment of his performance. He also noted that he was still waiting for communication from Stefanski following his departure from Cleveland, remarking, “Can’t wait to see you twice a year, Coach,” in anticipation of their future encounters as divisional rivals.
Mayfield, who played for the Browns from 2020 to 2021, led the team to the playoffs in 2020, marking their first postseason appearance since 2002. Despite his success, he requested a trade after the Browns acquired Watson in 2022. Since then, he has played for the Carolina Panthers and the Los Angeles Rams before finding a new home with the Buccaneers. Under his leadership, Tampa Bay has achieved notable success, securing division titles and earning back-to-back Pro Bowl selections in 2023 and 2024.
Coaching Changes Ignite Rivalry
Stefanski, who has now taken up the role of head coach for the Atlanta Falcons, replaced Raheem Morris, who was sacked following a disappointing season. The Falcons finished with an 8-9 record in the 2025 season, setting the stage for an intense rivalry with the Buccaneers.
As both Mayfield and Stefanski prepare to face off twice a year in the NFC South, the stakes are high. The evolving dynamics between the two figures highlight the competitive nature of the league, where past relationships can quickly transform into fierce rivalries on the field.
The upcoming matchups between the Buccaneers and the Falcons will not only be significant for the teams but also for Mayfield and Stefanski, who have a complicated history. As the season progresses, fans will be keen to see how their previous connections influence their performances in these crucial games.
