Paddy Pimblett Eyes Ilia Topuria Showdown, Inspired by Makhachev
Paddy Pimblett has expressed a strong desire to face Ilia Topuria, linking his motivation to the dominance of Islam Makhachev in the UFC. As Pimblett’s career progresses, he sees a match against Topuria not only as a chance to settle an old rivalry but also as a vital step towards achieving his larger ambitions within the sport.
In a recent interview with The Mac Life, Pimblett stated his admiration for Makhachev, whom he regards as the UFC’s pound-for-pound No. 1 fighter. Ahead of his upcoming bout with Justin Gaethje at UFC 324, which is scheduled for March 15, 2024, Pimblett emphasized the significance of Makhachev’s reign in shaping his aspirations.
“For me, Islam is pound-for-pound No. 1. Ilia is No. 2. I want to beat Ilia and be on that pound-for-pound list. I want to show everyone why we have weight divisions and that he’s just too small to beat me,” Pimblett remarked. He believes that a victory over Topuria would do more than simply resolve their longstanding feud; it would also underscore the importance of weight classes in mixed martial arts, an aspect he feels is often overlooked.
The rivalry between Pimblett and Topuria began during a backstage encounter at UFC London in 2022. Since that incident, both fighters have remained unbeaten in the UFC, heightening fan anticipation for their eventual matchup. Pimblett views this fight as a crucial next step before facing higher-ranked opponents, asserting that a win would mark his emergence among the elite fighters in the division.
Pimblett’s trajectory mirrors that of Islam Makhachev, who has risen to champion status through sheer determination and skill. The Liverpool native aims to showcase his capabilities and prove he can compete at the same level as his admired counterpart.
As the rivalry intensifies, the stakes grow higher. For Pimblett, beating Topuria represents not just a personal victory but a significant milestone in his quest for greatness in the sport. With both fighters undefeated, the excitement surrounding this potential matchup continues to build, promising a thrilling encounter for fans and athletes alike.
As UFC 324 approaches, all eyes will be on Pimblett and his aspirations to not only defeat Topuria but to solidify his standing in the lightweight division, inspired by the successful reign of Islam Makhachev.
