Uganda’s Museveni Wins Seventh Term Amid Election Controversy

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has secured a seventh consecutive term in office, extending his nearly 40-year rule by an additional five years. According to the Uganda Electoral Commission, Museveni received approximately 72% of the votes in the recent elections, while his main opponent, Bobi Wine, garnered around 25%. The elections, held on March 14, 2024, were marred by allegations of electoral fraud and violence.

Bobi Wine, a former music star turned politician, has accused the government of election rigging. Despite these claims, the African Union’s election observers stated they had seen “no evidence of ballot stuffing.” The electoral process has been characterized by unrest, with reports indicating that at least 21 people were killed in violence related to the elections. To date, authorities have confirmed seven fatalities.

In response to the unrest, the Ugandan government implemented an internet blockade, claiming it was necessary to prevent misinformation, fraud, and incitement to violence. Bobi Wine has called for the restoration of internet access, arguing that it is essential for democracy and transparency. The leader of the African Union observer mission, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, urged the government to reconsider the internet suspension, emphasizing the importance of open communication during the electoral process.

While Museveni’s victory assures his continued leadership, the elections featured six other candidates, none of whom received more than two percent of the vote. Voter turnout was reported at 52.5%, reflecting a significant engagement from the electorate despite the prevailing tensions.
