Community Rallies to Raise £86,000 for Officer After Fire Tragedy

A devastating fire on Boxing Day claimed the lives of a woman and her two young children near Stroud, prompting the community to raise over £86,000 for the surviving father, a police officer with Gloucestershire Constabulary. The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of December 26, when a fire broke out in a family home on Brimscombe Hill.

The emergency response mobilized multiple agencies, and residents were advised to avoid the area for much of the day. The father managed to escape through a bathroom window but was unable to rescue his children, aged seven and four, before the flames spread too quickly.

As of the latest reports, more than 3,000 individuals have contributed to a GoFundMe campaign aimed at supporting the officer during this unimaginable time. The campaign, organized by Lucy and Victoria, has raised £82,700, which is approximately 74 percent of its £110,000 goal. The funds are intended to assist the family with immediate needs such as emergency accommodation, clothing, and other essentials.

The organizers expressed in the campaign, “He is now facing an unimaginable period of grief alongside the very real and immediate practical reality of having nothing left. Right now, the most important thing is that he can focus on getting through each day, without the added pressure of financial or practical worries.”

The fire is believed to have originated on the ground floor, according to a spokesperson from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause, but authorities have stated it is not being treated as suspicious. Specialist teams are currently assessing the property, which has suffered extensive damage, to ensure safety for further investigation.

Nathaniel Hooton, the Deputy Chief Fire Officer, remarked, “Our thoughts are very much with the family and everyone affected by this devastating fire. We recognise this is an incredibly distressing time, and our crews will remain at the scene to support colleagues from other agencies and the local community as investigations continue.”
