Julia Bradbury Shares Life Changes After Cancer Diagnosis
Television presenter Julia Bradbury has opened up about significant lifestyle changes she has made following her battle with breast cancer. The Countryfile host, who received her diagnosis during lockdown, underwent a single mastectomy in 2021 to treat a tumor. Since then, she has completely eliminated alcohol from her diet, a choice she acknowledges has drawn mixed reactions from others.
Life After Cancer: A New Perspective
In a candid conversation with The Times, Bradbury reflected on the advice she received from medical professionals about the risks associated with alcohol consumption. She revealed that having more than four units of alcohol each week increases her chances of cancer recurrence by 28 percent. Sharing her thoughts, she stated, “I get a lot of pushback on social media about this. People go, ‘I was healthy, I go to the gym, I got cancer, and now it’s metastasised, and I’ve got secondary cancer.’ So, are you blaming me for my illness? No. All I’m saying is, this is what I went through.”
Bradbury described her cancer diagnosis as a wake-up call that shifted her approach to life. She emphasized a newfound focus on prioritizing her health, emotional well-being, and time spent with family. “It made me look at life differently,” she explained. “I am very, very fortunate, and overall, I’m having a wonderful life.”
Reassessing Priorities and Managing Health
Despite facing challenges, including financial worries and the loss of loved ones, Bradbury maintains a positive outlook. She shared, “You can get through things, you can overcome hardships, and I like to think that’s what I do.” However, she has also questioned whether her busy schedule is sustainable, noting advice from a doctor who remarked, “You’re running on a credit card. You can push through all sorts of things. But is that the best thing for you?”
Bradbury, now cancer-free, continues to attend regular medical check-ups and remains committed to her health. She stated, “I wasn’t close to death, but death looked me in the eyes. So I am more focused on my health than I ever have been. I don’t drink, I eat a healthy diet, and exercise every day.” Her commitment to outdoor activity has become a daily mantra, promising herself to spend time outside, regardless of the weather.
As a mother to her three children—Zephyr, aged 13, and Xanthe and Zena, both aged 10—Bradbury cherishes moments spent with them. “I really revel in being present with them and doing things with them that are nourishing and enriching,” she said. “Not big things, just being with them and spending time with them is really, really important.”
Before her cancer diagnosis, Bradbury had faced difficulties in achieving a balanced life. Now, she approaches her career and personal life with a reassessed perspective, seeking to embrace each moment more fully. As she continues her journey, Bradbury’s story serves as a testament to resilience and the importance of prioritizing health and family.
