Food Safety Agency Warns Against Consuming Dubai-Style Chocolate

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a warning advising consumers to avoid Dubai-style chocolate due to potential allergen risks. The alert follows the discovery that several chocolate products available in the UK do not comply with essential food safety and labeling regulations.

These popular chocolate bars, often filled with ingredients such as pistachio, tahini, and shredded filo pastry, have gained popularity over the past year. However, the FSA has identified multiple instances of these items containing allergens like peanut and sesame that are not disclosed on their labels.

Rebecca Sudworth, the FSA’s director of policy, expressed concern regarding the findings. She stated, “We’ve found that some products contain peanut and sesame that aren’t declared on the label.” The agency emphasized that for consumers with allergies, purchasing these chocolate bars could pose serious health risks.

Advisories for Allergy Sufferers

In light of these findings, the FSA is currently reviewing sampling data from products on the market to ensure compliance with food safety standards. Until those results are finalized, they recommend that individuals with allergies refrain from consuming Dubai-style chocolate. Sudworth elaborated, “People with an allergy should not eat Dubai-style chocolate. If you’re buying a gift for someone who lives with allergies, our advice is to avoid buying these products.”

The warning extends to all allergens, not just peanuts and sesame. For consumers without allergies, the FSA notes that these products may be safe, particularly when sourced from reputable brands and retailers.

Jessica Merryfield, head of policy and campaigns at the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI), reinforced the importance of clear labeling. She remarked, “The legal requirements on this are clear – any food containing allergens needs to be clearly identified and labelled as such to allow consumers to make informed and safe choices.” Failing to meet these requirements is not only illegal but also poses significant dangers to those with food allergies.

Merryfield urged all food businesses, including retailers and importers, to take immediate actions to comply with safety regulations. As the situation develops, consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant and prioritize their health by adhering to the FSA’s guidelines.
