Scottish Manufacturers Boost Productivity with £2.2M AI Initiative

A £2.2 million initiative has empowered over 90 organizations and enhanced the skills of 250 individuals in Scotland’s manufacturing sector. The Data-Driven Design and Manufacturing Colab (D3M Colab), managed by the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), focuses on integrating data science and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness across various industries.

By providing hands-on projects and tailored training, the D3M Colab equips manufacturers with the tools to apply data-driven solutions directly to their operations. Participants are learning to leverage data to tackle real-world industrial challenges, including optimizing production processes and enhancing quality control measures. Many organizations are already implementing these new methodologies, fostering a culture of data-informed decision-making where it can yield substantial benefits.

Transforming Manufacturing Practices

The initiative has already seen involvement from significant players in the aerospace and energy sectors. Collaborative projects have aimed at automating energy-use analysis and employing 3D model-based tolerance tools. These efforts aim to cut emissions, minimize waste, and improve the accuracy of critical components, ultimately enhancing overall performance and reducing the need for rework.

More than 120 projects spanning sectors such as food and drink, construction, and electronics highlight the tangible improvements Scottish manufacturers are achieving through data-driven techniques. A partnership with West College Scotland and Ailsa Reliability aims to extend these benefits to the workforce pipeline. Apprentices are receiving practical experience in condition monitoring, utilizing sensors and digital systems to monitor machine health, which prepares the next generation of engineers with essential data-driven skills.

Andrew Sherlock, the Director of Data-Driven Manufacturing at NMIS, emphasized the ambition of Scotland’s manufacturers toward digital transformation. “Many need structured support to turn awareness into action,” he stated. “This project provides companies with the tools, skills, and confidence to embed data-driven approaches within their organizations, unlocking improvements in efficiency, sustainability, and competitiveness.”

Addressing the Digital Divide

Participants in the D3M Colab receive customized training in data science for manufacturing, supplemented by continuous support from the NMIS AI in Manufacturing team and PhD students from the University of Strathclyde. According to the UK Innovation Report 2025, there is a growing trend among manufacturers across the UK to adopt AI, robotics, and data analytics to enhance efficiency and stimulate innovation. Despite this, the integration of digital tools remains inconsistent, with less than half of companies fully adopting such technologies.

The D3M Colab seeks to bridge this gap by offering structured, practical support to Scottish manufacturers. This helps them experiment with new technologies and realize their potential without disrupting daily operations. The initiative is part of the Glasgow City Region Innovation Accelerator programme, which is backed by a £100 million investment from Innovate UK on behalf of UK Research and Innovation. This programme aims to accelerate the development of high-potential innovation clusters, including those in the Glasgow City Region.
