James Acaster Sparks Controversy with Meltdown on Saturday Kitchen
Comedian James Acaster caused a stir on the latest episode of Saturday Kitchen when he exhibited what some viewers are calling a “disgraceful” outburst during the show’s conclusion on December 6, 2023. As the episode wrapped up, Acaster’s dramatic reaction to losing a public vote over culinary choices led to chaos in the studio, leaving audiences divided on whether his antics were humorous or inappropriate.
Chaos Unfolds in the Studio
Acaster appeared alongside his Off Menu co-host Ed Gamble to promote their upcoming performances at the Royal Albert Hall. At the end of the segment, viewers were asked to choose between two dishes for the guests to taste: a selection of tapas proposed by Gamble or Acaster’s unique fusion of Panettone and Christmas pudding. Gamble’s dish won with 54 percent of the public vote, prompting an explosive reaction from Acaster.
In a fit of frustration, Acaster overturned a festive wreath on the table, struck a stuffed polar bear, and dramatically wrestled with a Christmas tree. While host Matt Tebbutt and other guests, including chefs Andi Oliver, Tasha Marikkar, and Ben Lippett, were visibly entertained by the comedic spectacle, not all viewers shared their enthusiasm.
Viewer Reactions Split
Social media erupted following the incident, with some calling for an apology from BBC and the show’s producers. One viewer remarked, “Matt & the BBC should give an apology on next week’s show for the disgraceful behaviour on today’s show.” Another critic stated, “What a car crash of a show,” expressing disappointment over Acaster’s antics.
Despite the backlash, many fans defended Acaster’s performance, arguing that it was a deliberate comedic act. One supporter commented, “It seems I’m going against popular opinion, but I thought that today’s guests were very funny. If people can’t tell that James was play acting his tantrum, then it’s a shame.” Another fan described Acaster’s outburst as “the televisual highlight of 2025,” praising the chaotic display.
As the debate continues over whether Acaster’s behaviour was entertaining or unacceptable, the incident highlights the fine line between comedy and controversy in live television. Saturday Kitchen airs weekly at 10:00 on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer. With differing opinions on Acaster’s outburst, it remains to be seen how the BBC will address the situation moving forward.
